GOG is having a sale on the following games:

Caesar 3
Call to Power 2
Dark Reign + Expansion
Dark Reign 2
Police Quest: SWAT 1+2
SWAT 3: Tactical Game of the Year Edition

It’s one of those things where you get a greater discount, the more games you buy, with a 50% discount if you get them all.

I’m only interested in Caesar 3 and Call to Power 2, but I wanted to ask if these are at all worthwhile to play, given that I own newer, similar games (Civ 5 and Grand Ages: Rome). Are they?

Caesar was pretty soundly upstaged (IMHO) by the future Sierra city-builders Pharaoh, Zeus, and Emperor. Playing a walker based game without roadblocks is pretty frustrating.

That said, it’s not quite like Grand Ages.

SWAT 3 still holds up today as a fantastic tactical shooter (emphasis on the tactics) and is genuinely worth playing.

Caesar 3 is still a fun city builder, and is likely the best bet you can get on GoG currently. Call to Power 2 was very meh.

SWAT 3 is still one of the best tactical shooters I’ve ever played, only slightly upstaged by its sequel. I still play both regularly. Dark Reign is also awesome.

Better than Sim City 2000?

Hmmmm, I dunno…they’re both great in their own way. My favorite city builder ever is Zeus, though, so take from that what you will.

Thanks for the replies regarding Caesar 3 and Call to Power. I think I’ll skip both, partly since CtP was the one I was really interested in, and it doesn’t sound like it’s all that great, but also because I’ve bought too many GOG games that just don’t hold up very well anymore, and I’m suspecting these games belong in that group.

I’ll second the endorsements for SWAT 3, though. It’s still a great game, apart from the dated graphics. 4 is even better, in my opinion (but it’s not on GOG yet). 2 is not bad, although I didn’t think it was all that great either. 1 is total shit, and should be avoided, even if you buy the 1+2 pack.

Wow, POD has not aged well at all.

Yeah, I played with it a bit tonight and my first thought was “Hmmm, this must be the DirectX version, I remember the 3Dfx version looking much better.” Nope, it’s the 3Dfx version, via a built-in Glide wrapper.

I still enjoyed the racing, but man, early 3D is rough on the eyes… Edit: It does run well, though; I could never get it this stable when I tried myself from the original disc.

The first game that I ever owned that used my brand new VooDoo card was Turok. I was so fucking amazed. I actually loved the constant haze. It was amazing. For the time. I’m jaded as much as anyone now. But I’ll never forget that day.

I’ll reiterate the greatness of SWAT 3. I enjoyed it even more than Rainbow Six/Rogue Spear back in the day, and that’s saying something.

Caesar III was the first of the pinnacle generation of Impressions city builders and laid the groundwork for Pharaoh and Zeus (and one of those two is the best ever made, depending on what you like). That means it’s well worth playing, but probably has some unresolved flaws the other two fixed up (probably in the military management).

I bought SWAT3 a while back (before the sale, as usual :/) because I liked SWAT4. I hope they get to SWAT4 also, as no gamer should be without it. Great games. There was also a mod for SWAT4 made by actual police. Best endorsement a game of that sort can get, I think.

(Also, I’ve managed to lose/break the disc more than once!)

EvilIdler, which MOD is this? I love, love, love SWAT 4.

SWAT 4 is easily available from D2D at 15 bucks. Works fine on Win7 64bit. http://www.direct2drive.com/218/product/Buy-SWAT-4-Download

Relentless: Twinsen’s Adventure, aka Little Big Adventure, is this week’s release.

I loved this game way back when, but much like crusader, the controls were just wonky. I wonder if it holds up at all.

Cool! I picked this up out of a bargain bin a long time ago, but I was never able to get it to work.

There’s also LbaWin, which lets you run it as a native Windows app on modern systems and includes some new features like joystick controls. Haven’t gotten around to trying it myself yet, so I’m not sure how well it works.

Darklands is now available from Good Old Games for $5.99 U.S.

Awesome!! I lost my discs many years ago! Snagged!

GOG’s library just obtained godliness with the release of Twinsen’s LBA and Darklands.
