Huh, that is weird. Hope they get it fixed soon!

Could be something odd with my setup, who knows? I can still edit the config file directly, of course.

EDIT: Their customer support emailed me back to say I had to run the utility from the start menu/shortcut. That did the trick.

This is a problem I’ve run into before with GOG’s little graphics mode dealie on other titles.

I think it has something to do with UAC. I just manually play with the title’s DOSBOX.CONF anyway since I have skillz in DOSBox :)

The only game I’ve insta-purchased from GoG the day it was released so far is Freespace 2, Darklands almost got me today. But I was at work so I had time to realize it’s one of those games that I’d rather watch a friend play (and get extremely frustrated with - so that I can laugh, not that everyone would get frustrated with it).

If only GoG had the license, resources, and ability to not only make a game technically playable but also modernized. I’m sure it has been talked about many times before, and I know that would usher in a whole hell of a lot of other issues. But it’d be nice.

I watched a couple youtube videos of Darklands a year ago and the person playing didn’t realize that they weren’t even equipping their party members with weapons and armor until their party got wiped 1 or 2 times by street urchins or whatever (because a party apparently starts out with everything unequipped?).

The only reason I couldn’t get into Darklands is because of the heinous font and there’s so much text in the game (which I usually love…if I don’t get eyestrain from reading it). The screenshot actually looks legible, but imagine that blown up to a 27 inch monitor.

Different scalar options just make it worse. A shame, as I can see the underlying awesomeness of the game…

I like you.

Yeah, this is the rub. The game is all kinds of cool, but it does veritably assault the eyes these days.

It looked really sharp on my 14" CRT back in the day, lol.

Yeah that’s what sadly stops me from playing so many pre-2000 game classics, I try and end up with a headache because of the muddy graphics.

Sometimes I wish I kept an old CRT around for old games…

Darklands and I-War Deluxe in the same week. I may never get around to playing these games again (although I’ve been meaning to get to I-War, especially since there isn’t exactly anything comparable these days).

As I recall, I-War’s 3D graphics were 3DFX-only, however. Anyone know if there’s a glide wrapper of if the game at GOG is only going to offer software-3D, which is a drag, but for $3 can’t really complain. Can always track down your own glide-wrapper, I guess.

I honestly don’t recall if the game comes with a glide wrapper, but the normal software mode – which is how I first played the European version of I-War – is perfectly serviceable.

Desslock: The GoG version comes with a Glide wrapper that works for most people. Unfortunately, for me, even though the game itself looked gorgeous, the little interstitial movies throughout the game didn’t play well with that glide wrapper. So I went to the GoG forums, and there are a couple of threads there that really helped me out. So if you have problems with the interstitial movies, go to the GoG forums, they’ll direct you to a different glide wrapper that will solve the problem.

However, it could be that your 3Dfx Voodoo2 version of I-war works perfectly out of the box as downloaded from GoG, as it did for lots of folks.

With these games on sale (Atari stuff…LOTS), I’m thinking I’ll get one of the I-War games myself. If I’m pretty sure I’ll only play one of them, which one should I get? Which is considered the better game?

Nice timing on the B-17 offer, too.

First I-War is better, IMO.

I just bought it a week ago at full price. Along with four other games on this sale. Ugh.

I prefer the 2nd I-War… OH SHIT WHAT NOW!?

First I-War: String of linear puzzle missions
Second I-War: Giant free-roam galaxy where you can be a pirate, trade for supplies (through a console, not at all like X, it’s shallow) and advance the story through a linear string of puzzle missions.

Both are great, but the second is one of my favorite games ever.

YOU WANNA TAKE THIS OUTSIDE, MOTHERFUCKER?!

It’s that level of exuberance I want to start seeing on SGJ.

…sidenote: How so, kerzain?
