I read somewhere on their forums that it’s the publisher’s deal, not theirs. Sigh.

There was a bit of discussion about it when it first came out and although nobody had any concrete explanation, it was pointed out that the expansions were probably done under separate contracts that may have some kind of legal barrier that the original games didn’t, even if it was by the same developer. Maybe they have to get everyone who worked on it to sign off on it, but can’t track down Jimmy The Intern. The same could be true of some base games, but we don’t even consider them because they just don’t show up on GOG in the first place.
It seems a bit odd that EA is the only publisher running into that kind of trouble with expansions, but maybe it’s just a side effect of some standardized way they handle their contracts. People thought it might be a bit greedy too, if they were intending to charge for the expansions later on, but that seems less likely now that we’ve seen they’ve been willing to do bundling of even whole games.
Sale time!
I bought:
Wing Commander I+II
Played the first one when I was a little kid with my much older cousin and was blown away. It’s 3D!!!
Darklands
I have heard so much positive about this game and it’s based in Germany! Without Nazis! How can I not seize that opportunity?
Stonekeep
I’ve wanted to beat that game for a long time. Had it from some magazine since my childhood but lost the CD recently.
Ultima VII
As an RPG fan, I kinda feel obligated to play this because I never have before. It is heralded as a true classic - and a masterpiece.
Heroes Chronicles
Need moar Heroes III! Now this price is reasonable (I remember that NWC charged 30$ or so for each episode at the time of release)
Might & Magic 6-pack
Mainly for MM6 which I already own with original game box but it does only run under freaking Win9x. I expect this will run with Win7.
Huh. Ultima 4-6. Why not.
Ultima 7 Complete. Again, why not.
Duke Nukem Manhattan. This always looked like a fun little platformer.
B-17 2. Essentially just for collection purposes.
Ultima UW 1&2. Also why not.
So other than DN:Manhattan, stuff pretty much for collection purposes/replace the ones I have in my enormous, unlawful DOS game archive. I will probably end up firing up the UUWs because they are just that good.
Ohh, I missed Ultima Underworld! Mistake promptly corrected!
I notice that when I try to browse every title available on the sale it doesn’t actually show them all to me. If I do a search for Gabriel Knight, for instance, it shows me the three GK games, but it doesn’t show them to me in the list of games on sale. Even if I click to just show me the adventure games.
Weird.
I seriously considered getting MAX and Wing Commander 3, but I played those to death and don’t think I can squeeze any more enjoyment out of them other than looking at the box covers.
I did get Starflight 1+2 and The Last Express, though.
Looks like it’s GK1, GK2, GK3, Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Arcanum and Last Express for me. I’m tempted by The Longest Journey, but oddly enough $5 is out of my impulse range for a game I’m pretty sure I still have on CD somewhere. As much as I loved Freespace 2, I could have sworn it was available for free or something. And while I have good memories of Giants, Shogo, Master of Magic, Kingpin and SMAC, all I have to do is look at the screenshots to know, nope, I would never actually play these.
It was for a while, as you could get the game through the Freespace installer, if I recall correctly. Since GoG began selling it, all of those resources were removed since they want you to actually buy it. ;)

While Freespace 2 costs $$$, Freespace 1 has been modded into Freespace 2 and there is no reason to buy it (Freespace 1).
This is true, but I found it a bit odd. ;)

I would reconsider this. The voxels in SMAC are definitely garish and kind of hard to handle now, but there are some really great themes there and it still felt very fresh when I replayed it recently.
Snagged it. Thanks for the heads up!
Hey, I just realized that my GoG downloader named my Planescape:Torment folder “placement_torment”!
Oh, and I got Divine Divinity, Tex Murphy 1&2, and Freespace 2.
Completely agree. Gameplay totally holds up and the graphics aren’t that bad. 5 minutes in and you forget all about them as you start worrying about Miriam, Santiago and Chang screwing you over.
Bought all the GKs, Last Express, and SimCity 2000. Well, I have tried to buy them, but the transaction wont go through. What’s up with that?
Nearly bit but passed on: Settlers 2 gold, Wing Commander 1+2, Stronghold Crusader, Ultima VII. Can’t quite bring myself to pay $5 for some of those.

Some of my all time favorite games are on sale. But I recognize that alot of them have not aged well. It would be difficult to get into them for the first time now without the nostalgia factor.
So heres a list of good games that have aged gracefully (or just aren’t that old). I think you could enjoy these now even if you missed them back in the day:
Psychonauts
Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic
King’s Bounty: The Legend
Fallout Tactics
CD Project stated issues with their web services provider as of last night.
They advised to delay purchases for several hours up to a day until the problems are solved.
If you are charged but didn’t get the games in your account you should get in contact with them and they will sort you out.
My personal recommendation game-wise:
Commandos series
Only version of “Commandos - Behind Enemy Lines” that works fine on a modern CPU (the game originally based its speed on CPU speed so it runs far too fast on today’s systems).
Word of warning: The original Commandos + expansion is one of the hardest games I finished. It’s tough as nails and you will die countless but it’s SOOOO rewarding to beat it.
Finally something you might want to consider:
I do buy a lot of games from GoG and often simply to support them and send a signal to the publishers (Activision, EA, Ubi) that DRM-free works. It’s kind of a politicial statement at times (just like my buying habbits concerning indie games).
This won’t influence the big guys but maybe some not AAA studio / indie might see that you can still make money with older game concepts and re-make the games we all loved from the past or take the concepts and do something kickass with them.
I was going to buy a shed load of games, but i felt a bit bad and reduced my list to six games(enough for me and my lady to enjoy over the new year and a bit) for this sale. I’ll buy the others i was wanting later at a more reasonable price(i think GOG is too cheap!) that better supports the DD goodness of GOG.
for the lady:
Real Myst
Riven
The Last Express(i will want to give this a go also)
For me:
Wing Commander Privateer
Ultima 4+5+6
Ultima 7
