Wow, I’d forgotten they had M.A.X and M.A.X 2 there! Loved those games to bits! Of course, I’m a big fan of the Battle Isle series as well, so those games are right up my alley, so to speak.
Gah, they won’t take my money!! What’s going on, GOG?
This. Also they have, in my experience, relatively good customer service. And they occasionally give away games, as is the case now with Empire Earth Gold. Who else does that?
In contrast to Intruder’s philosophy of buying games from GoG simply to support them, I noticed on the GoG forum that some who already own Empire Earth are complaining that they don’t get an alternate game free. Sheesh. Sometimes what the internet says about humanity is downright depressing.
Try it now. I was having the same problem. When I clicked on the “Process order now” button, it reset all the payment detail boxes. But it just now processed my order.
Man, so many of these games come with awesome soundtracks but GK1 doesn’t. Boo and sads.
Edit: So has anyone played the adventure game In Cold Blood? The only reference I can find to anyone making to it here is one person announcing that it was now available and someone else saying they’d never heard of it before.
I did, it worked, thanks!
One of the most interesting aspects of getting a game from GoG is the ‘how well does it hold up?’ factor. As Bahimiron, Tony and others have mentioned, sometimes you simply can’t overcome the graphics or UI of an old game you once lurved.
I picked up Lands of Lore (with bonus sequel LoL2 I never played). I came very close to finishing the game when I had it originally on my AMD 486 running at a blistering 40 MHz. I used that to justify the purchase – ‘I finally have a chance to complete it now!’ – but I still went in skeptical.
However, once I changed DOSbox to run the game in an 800x600 window instead of 1920x1200 fullscreen, the pixelated graphics went from a blocky mess to charmingly retro, the mouse became snappy and responsive and I was instantly drawn in to what is both a more sophisticated take on Dungeon Master (actual different locations, NPCs to interact with) and less (no spell runes to line up before tossing your fireballs). I am impressed at how well this 18 year old game holds up, in all.

Lands of Lore is awesome. Probably the best of the old 1st person, non-3d rpg’s I’ve played.
I got The Last Express, Starflight 1+2, Ultima VII and Waxworks.
Anyone looking to get some great adventure games, and who already has the Gabriel Knight games and Last Journey, might consider the Tex Murphy games. The first 2 aren’t that great, IIIRC, but Under A Killing Moon and onwards is great.
The music settings for me in gk1 were fucked. If you aren’t getting the Sierra startup music go into dosbox, mount the gog.com/Gabrie~1 directory and run the install. Pick sound blaster/ad lib compatible. That will fix the music. Or at least it did so for me!

I ended up getting Might and Magic 7 and 8, Fahrenheit and Neverwinter Nights Diamond. Plus I’m totally happy because I also picked up Rayman 2. I love that game!

Did GoG lose another game from their collection? I was looking on the game catalog for this older RPG I heard was hardcore, something about it based on a German pen and paper game, but I don’t see it anymore on the list and I remember it from the last holiday sale, but I didn’t pick it up then.

Maybe, I remember one of the bullet points was how characters could die from hunger or the cold weather if they weren’t properly equipped. I can’t remember if the combat was done in the classic first person view or if it was on a grid.

You’re talking about the Realms of Arkania games. They’re still there, and well worth trying out. The system they’re based on is Der Schwarze Auge, by the way, which is the same system that the Drakensang games are based on.

I have conundrums, would appreciate views on these:
-
Stronghold or Stronghold: Crusader? Back in my adolescence I loved the original Stronghold, so I guess that will help me recapture the nostalgia. On the other hand, Crusader was released a little later so will theoretically hold up a bit better in 2011.
-
Populous 1 or Populous 2 or neither? I never played these, but god games has always been an interest for me so since they are on sale perhaps it’s a good chance to try my hand at one of these. I heard populous 2 was an improvement but I have not been able to find much input.
I always thought that Populous 1 was more or less a tech demo proving that the God Game genre could work. POP2 is an actual game, and a pretty good one at that.

That was it, there are just too many RPGs to keep track of.
So far my damage has been:
The Last Express
Realms of Arkania 1 and 2
Lands of Lore 1 and 2
StarFlight 1 and 2
Sim City 2000
Rayman Forever
I tried installing Rayman earlier tonight and I got a trojan warning from MSE. First time that ever happened with a game from GoG.

I don’t want to cause any further damage to your wallet, but there’s a Realms of Arkania 3 as well, which is sold on GOG seperately from the first two.
I guess you probably already know that, but I thought I’d mention it, just in case you don’t. :)
You’re welcome.
But I almost wish it hadn’t worked. I am $60 poorer…so far.
So many games; so little time to play them.
I’m a little late but Jab when you mentioned that characters could die of hunger or cold I knew instantly it was the Realms of Arkania series. And the reason I know is that the first time I played that game I spent the requisite time creating a party, fiddling with their names, classes. And as soon as I finished creating the party my wife came over and wanted to go out to lunch. So we went off to lunch. Since it was (or so I thought) a turn-based RPG, I didn’t bother pausing the game or anything.
I’m sure you can guess the rest - I came home from lunch (and shopping, or whatever) hours later to find my party had died of starvation.
I will never forget that gaming “experience!”
