Does GOG have every game on sale? I mean the email I got said 350 games. I didn’t know they HAD that many games. And it sure looks like just about everything is 50% off for the holidays. Guess I better stock up!

Most games. Their sale page mentions a few games they don’t have on sale.

Finally, there are a few games that are not in our holiday sale: in particular, Codemasters games and Gothic 1 are not included this year.

I agree with TheEnigmaticT here. I played and adored the original Populous but PopII takes everything that worked in the first game and polishes it up. The only reason to pass on it would be if you don’t like the more specific Greek mythology it uses vs. the original’s generic presentation.

I didn’t find much in the Steam sale, but then remembered this sale was still going (last day today).
If I were only to buy 1 Might and Magic game which one would be the best one to buy?
I’ve never played them before so there’s no nostalgia factor, and I know for sure the first few look too old to be enjoyable for me. I’m assuming it would be allright to jump into the series at 7 or 8?

Well, yeah, you could start with 7. I personally think 6 is the best one (7 and 8 use basically the same engine). If you got the 1-6 pack, that’s your best value. It includes the World of Xeen (4 and 5), which many people think are the best of the series. They are a bit more old school, both graphically and UI. But 6-8 could be considered ugly because they are an attempt at 3d, but with sprites still. I get over that, and love 6-8 (especially 6 and 7 though). If you are choosing between 7 and 8, get 7. It’s a better game.

I did not play them all, but of the ones I played M&M 7 is the best. Good story, good dynamic, multiple endings.

I’m fine with picking up the 6 pack as well, the later ones look fine. (I just picked up Lands of Lore for example) it’s just the really early ones that are too old for me.

So 6 or 7 to get the best of the series, is that right?

Just picked up a bunch of favorites, including Alpha Centauri, so I could stop dealing with the NoCD patch and other annoyances of the CD copy I own.

But there’s no Alien Crossfire! Why the heck not? SMAC is so much better with it.

Anyone know if the retail Alien Crossfire will work with the GOG SMAC?

I just bought a game that doesn’t exist, Star Control 3! This is so awesome!

Wait, why doesn’t Star Control 3 exist?

Because it was (apparently) ass.

I picked up the 1 - 6 pack when it came out a few years ago. I messed around a little with a few of the games and had just about given up, thinking the games were just a bit too old school, but so glad I kept giving them a chance because 4 got its hooks into me big time at some point a few months ago. Once I got used to the UI and the general flow of the game, I loved it! And am hoping to play up through the later games, probably up to 8.

I went with the 1-6 pack in the end as well. It’s usually harder to go back in a series then to play them in the right order due to improvements in graphics and gameplay. I had a quick look at 1 and 2 but they look too old. I’ll see if 3 grabs me, and else I’ll go on to 4-5.

I’m playing Lands of Lore first though, it’s such a great game and it has such a huge nostalgia value for me.

From what I remember on the chatter here apparently there’s some tie-up with the rights to Crossfire.

It’s probably why we will never see Magic: the Gathering on GOG even though it would be cool to play that again. I doubt Wizards will ever give the ok. Why let a game that is obsolete in terms of Magic rules compete with the Magic games they are pushing now?

So my haul ended up being:

Icewind Dale Complete
Divine Divinity
Fallout
Age Of Wonders
Arcanum

Looking forward to AoW and the IWD expansions which I’ve never played (and to replaying IWD, of course, such an underrated game…as is Div Div).

A team of “cleaners” are enroute to your house. Everyone else, disregard this message. No such game exists.

OK we’ve got a Code Red on Quarter to Three. I recommend we nuke the site from orbit. Its the only way to be sure.

Well, it does exist – until you play it! Then you wish so fervently it didn’t that it pops right out of existence.

Well, almost. The only thing that remains is a vague unease that a sequel to Star Control 2 will never be made, which seems so strange. How can the best game of all time not have a sequel?! Yet sadly, somehow, you know it is true and that sanity demands you not inquire further.

I’ve even got the Star Control 3 box, which is pretty cool for a game that doesn’t exist! Some sort of promo, I think. Pity they never got around to making an actual game.

Oh, that’s a nice bunch of high quality games! You’ve just added hundreds of hours of gaming to your backlog, those games will keep you busy for a while. ;)

Just posted on Twitter

“We’re bringing you guys a surprise new publisher tomorrow, creator of a classic strategy series! Who do you think it will be?”

So given the recent release of Age of Empires 3 on Steam I would guess Microsoft. Is there another classic strategy series missing from GoG?

Forgot about X-Com so maybe 2K games is more likely candidate.
