So is this thread now going to be renamed “GOG”?

Good new games without draconic DRM. Sounds like a winner to me.

Now’s our chance to get rid of the worst blight upon vBulletin thread titles: quotation marks!

Before I clicked on the link, I was thinking that it would be great lure to the new GoG if they sell Grimrock at around $10, but it’ll probably be closer to $20. $11.99 is close enough for me. Sold.

Soooo…based on the “newer” game lineup, the powers that be behind GoG decided that they want to be…Desura. Great.

There’s something to be said about serving a niche, and with few missteps GoG did great at aiming at the nostalgia gaming crowd. Now they’re jumping into the fray of every other digitial distributor out there and leading off with…“well worn” (putting it mildly – Trine for example was like on a Humble Bundle a year ago) indie titles and a preorder on a modern Dungeon Master/Eye of the Beholder update.

MEH. Guess all good things can’t last.

i just wonder if they’ll stop focusing on older titles now.

I’m guessing they simply ran out of old titles they could get the rights to from publishers. Well, maybe not entirely but getting close. So they had to make a move. Indies and non-AAA new titles pretty much sums up all the options (AAA won’t ever give them DRM free standalones).

I really, really hope not.

Indeed.

Er, you’re right, I don’t sorry. To that end however, a GOG staff member posted this:

Don’t worry; we have dozens of classic games signed, in the process of remastering, and scheduled to come out on GOG.com in the next few months. We aren’t going to stop releasing classic games.

That’s a relief.

Fortunately, newer games will get old. There will always be good old games as long as there are good new games that age gracefully.

Except many games are so DRM infected it’s unlikely they could/would be released DRM free. Some games may not be released for political reasons. Steamworks games? Will we ever see Skyrim on GOG? I say no.

Here’s a rough formula of the number of “AAA” games released in the last three years that may end up on GOG in the future, DRM free.

X - 98.7% = Z
where x is the total games discussed above. Z is the possible answer.

I…what?

Yes but what does “Good Old” mean? Will today’s better games stand out in tomorrow’s gaming environment the way 80’s and 90’s classics stand out today, and become classics themselves?

Time will tell but imho things aren’t moving in that direction. Games will always age but don’t necessarily become fondly remembered classics.

Can’t wait to see Call of Dookie games slutting up their website.

I think maybe they should make a clearer distinction between the real GOG titles and the newer indie types? You can filter for ‘Indie’, but if you don’t do that then all the GOG games are shown mixed with the indies. I think maybe they should make Indies have it’s own list be default, as it will get pretty long before long.

Also i’d love to see Cliffskis games on there, and Vic Davies, the COE3 chaps, some of the Matrix games stuff (like Distant Worlds), the new game from the Terraria guy; Starbound, also Starfarer and a bunch of the better indie adventure games (A New Beginning, Gemini Rue, anthing from the Machinarium guys etc).

For me GOG just does DD the way it should be, no DRM, secure and simple with no objective or additional requirements other than getting the game to you to play as you wish.

Adding new Indie titles is awesome imho, as long as they can aim for the better quality, as there are a number of other channels to get indies in general, so they need to make sure they can keep to the theme of ‘Good’, even if that is subjective to some extent as we have seen with some of the old classics in their regular release. Overall it just makes sense they look to branch out into other games that match their general outlook, and Inidies are a near perfect match(all about helping the ‘little guy’ over the DRM ladden corporate monster of AAA etc). More power to them.

I genuinely wish to see Call of Duty 1-3 on GOG.

Not a huge fan, but those first couple of games ARE classics.

3 was console-only so don’t hold your breath for it.

He’s probably referring to ex 2015 ex Infinity Ward guys second world war FPS trilogy
Medal of Honor allied assault, Call of Duty 1 and Call of Duty 2
