In celebration of Fallout’s being free at GOG, here is an unnecessarily Instagrammed photo of my original 1997 copy of the game, with all original inserts!
Welcome to the Vault of the Future!
Wow…Alone in the Dark is a lot uglier than I remember. I remember low-poly models, but that resolution…
I haven’t played a Might and Magic game in forever. I doubt I’ll ever go back to the RPGs, but I might enjoy revisiting a HOMM game. Which is the right one to play?
Everyone will say three. That’s probably right.
It might be two, though.
So, what you’re saying is “not 4”, which is the one I haven’t played. I vaguely remember liking the art and music better in 2 and the gameplay better in 3.
Four’s weird. It’s funky. It changes up some dearly-held systems. If you’ve played all the others, than give it a look, sure.
Four is weird. I enjoyed the new game systems and the new style of art, etc. But after a 24 hour hotseat game my friends finally beat all the random monsters in our way and got to the enemy castle only to discover that the enemy AI hero had just been going around in a circle sucking on his thumb the whole time we were in epic battles leveling up our heroes and building up huge armies. So the final battle against the AI was trivial. So I went online and discovered that people were saying the AI was basically completely broken in that game. So I never played it again. I’ve gone back to play HoMM3 and HoMM2 several times after that though.
3 is the gold standard in the series, followed VERY closely by 2. ;) Get 'em both!

Personally, I love the M&M 6-8 - simply brilliant music, and very atmospheric games.
Heroes 3 is the overall star of the show.
Heroes 4 was fun if you just played the campaign which was really well written and made up for the adventure AI with good scripting, always did like the art in that one.
Heroes 2 has the most overall “charm” of the series, the gameplay is a bit more simple though.
Heroes V complete with the AI fan patch gives 3 a run for the money IMO, and lately is the one I play the most.
Which edition of Disciples II should I play if I only play one of them? The original base game, Dark Prophecy?

I don’t understand the question. Play the most advanced edition – Rise of the Elves.
The GOG gold edition has two executables:
Disciples 2 - Dark Prophecy & Gallean’s Return
Disciples 2 - Rise of the Elves

You want Rise of the Elves.
To clarify, Rise of the Elves incorporates DP & GR
Strange that nobody has mentioned Fallout is FREE for a limited time now!

I love GoG, but everytime I go there I find myself looking for games that they still don’t have. Like the recent Kickstarter Wasteland 2 makes me wonder why they don’t have Wasteland. Or why they don’t have the Warlords series. I realize its not up to them in that publishers or rights holders have to agree, but their list always seems incomplete.
