Whoa, stealth Wednesday release of Sid Meier’s Colonization. Gonna have to snag this soon.

Has anyone noticed the name of the city in the bottom left screenshot of Colonization’s GOG store page? A hint, perhaps?

Good catch!

One can only hope…

Nice catch. Hopefully “spring 1529” doesn’t signify anything. :)

SS2 and Wasteland both get name dropped. Promising.

So does Loom, for what it’s worth.

Loom? I have it already…oh, oh Steam.

Also a pack of Tomb Raider 1, 2, and 3 for 10 bucks.

shrugs

Any difference between this version and the newer one (apart from gfx obviously)?

As far as I remember, totally different systems - The old Colonization is far superior as well.

The big question on the Colonization release:

Is it it the DOS version with inferior graphics and some really inferior AI, or the Windows 3.11 version, with the improved graphics and gameplay.

Yes, there’s a difference.

According to some guy on GOG forums, it’s the DOS version.

Looking at the screenshots with that near-unreadable font (another advantage of the Win 3.11 version) I can tell that it is indeed the DOS version.

What a shame. Bad choice by GOG. Wonder if there was something that kept them from doing the Windows one? Perhaps with high-end CPUs it’s easier to get the DOS version running in a DOSbox shell?

I think that’s often the case. It’d be nice if they could offer both, though.

Get an Amiga emulator and the Amiga version of Colonization, Far superior. I believe it also was the last Microprose game ever made for the AMiGA so there is a sense of history to it as well.

The Amiga version (which I loved too) was very similar to the Windows version of the game, with better fonts and sharper graphics.

Paul Barnett (EA/Bioware) was on the latest Giant Bomb cast talking about EA. Apparently their work with Origin has gotten the lawyers to loosen up on rereleasing their old games. I guess GoG is now sitting on a giant pile of old EA games trying to decide which ones they want to actually release.

He also talked about trying to get the Legend of Grimrock guys to do a remake of Ultima Underworld.

I’m quite keen on the blackwell saga:

I’ve not got it yet, but i’ve been going through a bit of an adventure game revival over the last year, revisiting Monkey Island, and some new stuff like ‘A New Begining’ etc. I’m quite liking the change of pace (to mostly strat games) and there are some great indie efforts around like this it seems. I’m very happy that i can get games like this on GoG now.

Shitty release day in GoG. Heroes of Annihilated Empires and the early PS1 era platformer Pandemonium.

Only plus that I can think of is that GoG is finally using a GLide-enabled DOSBox wrapper for its DOS games (Pandemonium is being rolled out with 3Dfx enabled). Hopefully, they are taking the time to massage Carmageddon for a 3Dfx release, otherwise what is taking so fucking long
