Is one of those worth playing at this point?
I take back two or possibly three things I’ve said about GoG being a bunch of eurotrash shovelware merchants with the release of the RB pack. RB1 is terribly long in the tooth but is a historical milestone in simming; Rb3D has one of the better campaign engines ever made. Still, if you’re serious about WWI simming you’re better off going the OFF or RoF route.
I know people who still swear by Red Baron 3D, but I never played it myself (I only played and enjoyed the first). The screenshots look pretty considering how dated the game is, and it’s not as if there are new innovations coming out every year for WWI flying sims. I’d say it’s worth it, and I’m considering picking up the package for myself.
The patched version of Red Baron 3D is the best WWI flight sim ever made. So, there’s that.

They released that for free in 1997. I’m not sure how you’d get it now though.
Pretty sure it’s easy to find a download link for Betrayal at Krondor.
Here’s one…

Sadly, the installer doesn’t work on a 64-bit OS. A personal hope of mine would be for a re-release of the game, but given it’s out there for free that would be a rather silly investment of time and money for GOG.
I’ve not yet tried the two scharmers mentioned, OFF or RoF, so I dunno if it’s the best EVAR, but it’s certainly my favorite, mostly due to the dynamic campaign generator.
I haven’t played a lot of RoF (I’ve played more OFF), so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I’d say that they surpass RB3D in a number of specific ways, but RB3D is still the better game when considered as a whole package. If someone could make a game that looked and flew like RoF, but had RB3D’s campaign engine… hoo, boy.

They did it for Beneath a Steel Sky which has been freeware for years.
Good point! Thanks for lifting my spirits a bit :)
I have it on a CD actually. It’s also the biggest pain I’ve ever seen to get it to run; honestly, I’ve never been successful. I would happily pay GOG $10 for a version that I can install and run.
I think Betrayal at Krondor has a DOS installer and game exe as well, and I had it working under DOSBox at some point.

I played it with VDMSound, without problems. I played the version Sierra offered as free download, though.
I have never been able to get it to run. I would gladly pay GOG for a version I can install and run.
But back to Red Baron. I remember enjoying it back when, even though I wasn’t very good at it.

If I remember correctly, the free version released was the DOS/floppy version NOT the CD-ROM version. (Presumably for bandwidth reasons in 1997. Or they didnt want to spend time rewriting the CD version to not look for the CD)
The CD-ROM version had extra vidoe / fmv / voice acting on it I think.
So GoG could release the CD version and have something more than the freeware version to offer.
It wasn’t much better when it came out, at least for me. I think BaK was the biggest autoexec.bat/config.sys editing nightmare I’ve ever had.

Surely nothing could beat Ultima 7 and the voodoo memory manager? :-)
That’s a thought - imagine the Ultima series on Good old Games. EA could make some nice money from its monster back catalogue.

For me, it was Darklands that required the most fiddling with settings to get to work, but U7 was a close second.
Gametap has a working version of Betrayal at Krondor. I was able to DL it and run it. I’m not sure how they do it, but it worked great. Again, we’re not talking 64bit though.
