Ehh 2007 was not great. Around 2010 the free porn sites really started opening the floodgates. It is hard (cough) to imagine now but free – that is, ad subsidized – porn was not really a thing on the Internet until relatively recently.

There was an article linked on reddit discussing that. Some journalist/blogger reviewed a couple of sites and if I remember correctly, his answer was, not really, and yes.
One thing of note, on Pornhub he found that they actually had nearly completely different content to the point he would need to log out to see the standard stuff. Paid versions were always longer, ad-free, and more of a push for professional content, not amateur content.
Feel free to google his summary, it was surprising to note that he wasn’t really that much of a fan of the cost versus um … reward.
The tube sites essentially destroyed the porno business as it was 10 years ago. Only highly unsophisticated self-flagellates pay for porn these days and while the tube sites themselves do make money, they’re largely sourced by “user-uploaded content” which doesn’t pay the creators a flat dime.
That makes sense, and is probably why the paid content was all professional produced.
