How are you all installing this mod? I used the RoT launcher yesterday, and it downloaded files all night long and still isn’t finished this morning, are there direct links that work better, or is it just huge?
Yeah, like I said upthread, the launcher took over a day for me, and even then it didn’t seem to be done. So I went back to the page and opted for the torrent download, which took 30 minutes.
There’s no fancy install. You just put all the files in the rar file in the “mod” directory. Then within the game, you select “custom game”, and it will show up as one of the options since it’s in that mod directory.
I downloaded the single 6gb zip file from his google drive, unzipped into /mods/ directory and then choose it as a custom game on the title screen.
edit: oh as rock8man said
I finished a run with a chain lightning sorc/shaman. REALLY really amazing game, all the way to the end. Some of the areas are just unbelievable …like…Kurast…it’s just spot on. The quality of this mod is just incredible, it’s had tons of thought and care put into it. This is a better D2 in every possible way, I really hope it’s allowed to exist.
Just starting my Amazon/Palie combo now, I’m quite sure this game will keep me entertained for a very long time.
Did you play on Normal or Veteran? You finished fast. My sorceress is taking forever in the early areas on Veteran, so last night I started a Barbarian on Normal instead, and he kills things in one hit, which is much faster.
Downloaded. This is dope. Thanks for sharing you guys!
I always play on easy mode, I hate bullet sponge mobs lol. Balance was good for normal I thought, wasn’t really tough at all, but I enjoy that. Sorc is in nightmare now but haven’t played it much since there about 128739827397283 builds I want to try.
Lightning Sorceress + Shaman was a good idea because of lightning synergies. What synergy do you see between Amazon/Paladin? Getting a souped up Valkyrie and helping her with a badass aura?
I’m thinking Classic Necromancer and Paladin would be a great combo for that reason. Get your Skeleton crew and the aura to help them.
I woke up early and played Reign of Terror for quite a while this morning before getting ready for work.
Devotion points are such a great incentive for doing quests aren’t they? Such a brilliant idea. Now every little subquest has a nice reward in the form of a devotion point. I finished the Forgotten Tower quest this morning and then went to the Outer Cloister waypoint.
I’m still not used to the fact that everything that drops is already identified. Suddenly Deckard Cain has no use in the game, even though I rescued him. I prefer it this way though. It’s nice not having that extra task. I decided to make a Necro Necro. I couldn’t resist it. So now one class is the Classic Necro from Diablo 2, and the other class is a Necro from Grim Dawn. At level 12 or 13, my Skeleton army is starting to get pretty awesome. And my Clay Golem is badass even with only one point.
I noticed they reworked a lot of the classic Diablo 2 skills. For example, remember how Amplify damage was super duper useful but you only needed one point in it to amplify the damage as high as it would go? (Putting more points into it cast it over a bigger area). Well, not so in this one. One point means amplifying the damage very little. You have to put more points into it to make it as powerful as it was in Diablo 2.

I tried this - I am a great fan of Grim Dawn, and I do remember somewhat fondly playing Diablo 2. Now - the graphics are still muddy greens, the maps are just squares with fences all around, and there is very little to show where to go. You level slowly as well, at least from killing enemies. Sad to say, this was my experience and after about 30 minutes, I called it quits.
Maybe its my state of mind (Forced vacation due to corona lockdown) but I really wanted to enjoy this but for some reason, it just felt really flat and old school - and not in a good way. Level design has come a long way since Diablo 2.
The level design gets a lot better. The first few levels basically copy Diablo 2, but then it starts diverging and getting more interesting. The stony field, for instance, has a lot of bridges and changes in elevation. The Black Marsh has some wooden planks in certain areas to help you through the Marshland. It’s very well done. Plus when you get to the actual towers and cliffs, those are actual changes in elevation towers are actual towers and cliffs are actual cliffs. It’s nice.
Anyone have a good d/l location for this mod y’all keep talking up?
Nevermind, found it.
Concentration, blessed aim, fanaticism depending on build. You can also equip a bunch of different gear that gives you auras as well, and they stack. Having 2 holy shock auras going at once for instance… There are a lot of shenanigans you can get up to with Palie as a 2nd class. You can also go the other way around on something like a zeal/aura palie, and take all the defensive stuff from Zon. You can end up with a palie that has very high block, along with dodge and ranged dodge. If you max all of that stuff or close, you are pretty much unhittable even by bosses.
Palie is a great 2nd for just about any class really, because it’s just on demand ‘what do you need at this second’ sort of class.
Sorc and shaman is made in heaven. My chain lightning sorc is just so much fun to play. Between the D2 skills, and all the stuff the shaman brings including -resist, it’s a real powerhouse, and quite tanky if you build it that way. Sorc also has the benefit of being the easiest to level right out of the gate, because charged bolt is so freaking overpowered at lower levels. Charged bolt until you get enough points for chain lightning, until you get enough points for Blizzard, until Frozen Orb, or you can just sit on chain lightning and boost casting speed as high as possible.
One of the many things that’s awesome about this mod, free unlimited respecs. I love this mod so much.
I made it to the Cold Plains with a paladin and got zerged like I was Peter O’Toole traipsing around in S Africa.

Peter O’Toole was in South Africa? Or do you mean the middle east (ie Lawrence of Arabia)?
Maybe compared to modern ARPGs, but it’s a lot faster than in Diablo 2 proper. In the original you could expect to hit level 30 around the beginning of Act V on Normal. In Reign of Terror I hit level 30 near the end of Act II. And because of the loot, devotion points, et cetera I am far more powerful than I would be in Diablo 2.
I’m still blown away by how great this mod is. My Berserker Barb is going through everything like butter at this point.
The consistency of how well and how thoughtfully everything has been done in this mod is really something. There are some areas that are just spot on, and the ones that aren’t are vastly improved from the original. River of flame, city of the damned, pretty much all of act 4 are just incredible, and to me convey the feeling the game was trying to get at much better than the original.
It’s also amazing what a good job they did with mobs. Every single area has just the right mobs, and mix of mobs.
Zulu, aka Battle of Rorke’s Drift. Great movie!
