Ran on pretty much everything at the time.

Considering the quality of AH PC games in the 80s I wonder if it was any good. Highly doubt it lived up to the quality of boardgame.
It didn’t. I mean at the time it was just neat to see that done on a computer as a computer game. But I mean I thought Taipan or Monday Night Football was the bees knees then, before I stumbled across that.
Lemme go listen to Synchronicity now…

What I wanted in the 80s was the SSI catalog, Mech Brigade and Kampfgruppe in particular. Looking through their catalog was as awesome as going through the AH catalog.
In c. 1984-5 I played those on my C64 extensively. Even though the AI was, to be generous, bad, I enjoyed the random scenarios a lot.
Guide me here grogs. No AI is not a big deal to me, handling the very complex rules is cool. But still. Is it fun I wonder? is WiF fun as a boardgame even?
$40? Would I be better off just punching my physical boardgame and playing it?

Me hate the WiF. Mongo no like.
Having played it, and knowing how all the ADG-driven PC games are just abominable, if you are eager to WiF, I’d just punch and play. But beware…beware…
Cheers! I trust your judgement! You saved me money and time :)
Yeah, I’d have to agree with @Navaronegun; from what I remember of WIF the board game, it was something I wanted to like but never did.
It takes the Second World War and turns it into a grinding Great War-esque production festival. There is no feeling of flow and sweep on the ground, in the air or at sea and it is bogged down by minutia. I played it many more times than I would have liked (to say the least) because of the gaming group I was in in college, where it had its fans, don’t get me wrong.
I always wanted to like it because it deals with the conflict globally, but it takes the often-used (sadly) decision to treat the Pacific at a 1:2 scale to the ETO. And then additions add on the rest of the globe. At the same scale. So it turns the Great War grindfest into a no movement grind fest.
I still get bad PTSD flashbacks when I hear the phrase “Gearing Limits.”
And when I hear “Production Wheel” I remember my prior plays as this:

Sweet, I didn’t realize they were finally releasing. A discount for owners of the original is nice as well.
Any more nominations? I’ll probably get the poll up today/tomorrow.
Corsica.
A fascinating corner of the Mediterranean Theater that to my knowledge hasn’t been covered. Focused more on the political interactions between the Italians, French resistance, and the Germans than combat. Maybe something akin to White Tribe.
Anybody have (English) reading recommendations on this? I haven’t found much, but I’ve been too busy to be thorough.

That’s an awesome AAR. Feels like the players ships got a little lucky.

I played a really cool matrix style game one year at Gen Con that was based on Indonesia and East Timor. Not really a war game per se, but more a pol-mil simulation with the players taking various positions in the Indonesian Government, PRC, and United States. I’m not sure how it would translate into a game, but it would be fascinating to see more war games with a diplomatic/role play element to them.
As a side note, it could be interesting to run a matrix style game by forum.

Fewer but more advanced planes on smaller carriers with lots of AA seems to be a good strategy.
East Timor ‘75 or 90s-00s crisis?

90s-00s, assuming that sneaks into your 20th century requirement.
Confirmed: Fall Anton’s Shadow - Corsica under occupation, 1942-1943, Political/Military.
