Yuppers.

😢

Can anyone find the West German 35th Mech Inf Bde of the 12th PzGr Div for the 1962 scenario? It has to be in here somewhere.

Found it

Was it in the wood pile by the migs?

Omg this looks great! Might be next up for me after Rostov 41, also SCS.

Do the rules require you to play the song the scenario is named after on auto-repeat as you play?

Yeah I’ve got some words for Carl Fung about the scenario names…

I was skeptical about this one (and still am a bit — need an opposed play, which I hope will happen face-to-face next week) but the variety of scenarios is pretty interesting. Czech out this comparison between the 1945 scenario (“Don’t Fence Me In” — either Western Allies or Soviets can be aggressor) and the 1962 Missile Crisis scenario (“If I Had a Hammer”):

1945 has both sides mobilized for a world war. Lookit all those units. The Sovs look pretty tough, but so do the Good Guys! Division-level slogfest?

On the other hand, 1962:

Soviets look pretty thin on the ground! Now, this is just at-start forces, and in the run-up (great rule btw) they will be heavily reinforced, but NATO looks pretty decent here. I gotta talk to Carl Fung because I dunno—in 1962 the Belgians really has a tank brigade based in Cologne? Fine, whatevs. The WP needs to reduce Berlin here, too, unlike 1945. The rules for NATO collapse are interesting: the WP collects “reasons” for NATO collapse, which are essentially (1) capture the Ruhr; (2) Get west of the Rhine; and (3) threaten the NATO sea lanes (capture Bornholm Island and a bunch of ports). Each turn you roll a die and if it is =< the number of reasons, NATO collapses and free vodka and cabbage for everybody. BUT you cannot roll until you own all of Berlin. PLUS you can get two additional bonus reasons (4) NATO has used chemical weapons and you have not yet, and; (5) NATO has used nukes and you have not, yet. Gives some incentive on both sides for restraint. I’m interested in the 1975 scenario as well.

One other interesting choice: NO SUPPLY RULES. Basically, everybody is in supply all the time because, uh, prepositioning of supplies, local stores, and I dunno. Plentiful tank ammo you can just grab from someone’s house. I don’t think that works so well in the 1945 scenario from a historical standpoint.

@Rod_Humble, I suggest you get this. I think you will enjoy it.

Thank you so much for the thoughts on it! I already own it and its right here on my desk! :) Its between that and Panzer Battles Chir River (also SCS) next. Out of the three Iron Curtain looks to be the heaviest of the three and at the highest scale but also a theme I really love so I may save it till last or hit it up after the lightest Rosov, we shall see. I am enjoying playing through a series in a flow. Helps not having to relearn everything, its going to be a interesting SCS winter for me! :)

Excellent! I got Rostov as well in the same shipment. If you’re looking for good SCS, I can personally vouch for Autumn for Barbarossa. Had a couple of opposed plays this summer. Works pretty well.

Oooh excellent! I own that too! Hmm maybe a long happy winter of SCS!

You stack counters really purty.

My stacks always were kind of sloppy, and fell over.

I would love to hear what you think about it. I haven’t played the SCS games, but this looks like it might be at a level that I can comfortably solo.

Fellow grogs, if you’re interested, I’ve started posting an AAR of my solo play of World in Flames Collectors Edition over at BGG. It’s a pretty big AAR, and I didn’t want to post the whole thing here, as it would clog this thread. I may post the occasional photo here, though, as I’ve just started taking photos more diligently.

My game is up to September/October 1940, but the AAR has just finished reporting on March/April 1940, so the AAR is a bit behind.

A quick summary as of Spring 1940: Germany took a while to conquer Poland because of weather and incompetence. It’s just now turning west. Italy is scaring the willies out of the Commonwealth with a determined invasion of Egypt, and the Brits have not built enough land units, so they’re reeling. Italy and the Brits have had several epic naval battles in the eastern Med – really fun! Japan has taken a crucial resource location in China. The US has not yet geared up its production; working on it.

Full disclosure: I’m newbish, and this is my first play of the boardgame. I actually beta-tested Matrix’s computer WIF for a decade, but I was testing, not learning strategy. Moreover, the computer enforced the rules for me, so I didn’t internalize them well enough to play the board game, which in any case uses a new ruleset. On top of all that, I’m using almost all the optional rules, because I want to see how they work, and I like chrome. So expect more incompetence than brilliance. Comments welcome. :)

Does the collectors edition have all the extra stuff they have put out over the years like Patton in Flames or whatever it is called? Has ADG really just had 3 games over the years, WiF, EiA, and 7 ages? I guess they had Days of Decision as well, and apparently something called Rubout.

The Collectors Edition comes in three different flavors. I have the “middle” one, which includes Planes in Flames, Ships in Flames, but not Patton in Flames or Days of Decision. But yeah, WiF is one of the company’s main properties.

Incidentally, Harry Rowland, the head of ADG, has been in the hospital after heart bypass surgery. He’s recovering now. Here’s wishing him well.

Talk about quality over quantity, I have no idea if 7 ages is any good, but World in Flames and Empires in Arms is a decent portfolio. :)

Neat! One of your posts there says that you “started a couple years ago.” You’ve had this set up for several years??

Yep, I’ve had the game on the table since the summer of 2018! It’s on a table in my finished attic, so it’s out of the way – no one bothers it. I tend to play in little bits here and there, often playing just part of one impulse. I’ve taken breaks, too. Lately I’ve been playing a bit more intensely, maybe an hour or so a day. I do hope to finish in less time than the actual war took. :)

Uh, it has hexes

That looks…odd.
