I agree Teiman. It would be unusual for a large server farm to be completely locked down by a DDOS attack. I think today’s issues are more along the lines of amazingly extreme loads on the servers that even the stress and BWE tests could not predict. Similar issues occurred with WoW back in Dec 2004 when that game was first released.
The number of people logged into the Charr area on my server today (SoS) was phenomenal. There were so many people logged in that it was completely screwing with the dynamic event engine. The stress tests and BWE events were not even close to being this busy.
Yeah, I am hearing that people are getting in but no luck for me either.
Got past the initial login screen, then errrrrror : (
I am back in! Keep trying.
oh dear sweet Jesus I’m in!

You sound like me on the nigh of the very first time ;-)
I logged in, but I can’t play :(. The “Play” button remains greyed.
Good Boooyyyyyyyy Login, now STAY!
Well, I had a problem-free blast with it for about three hours last night and then slept through all the issues.
Now it’s time for the farmer’s market and swimming pool with the family. I could try to opt out, but I think a little down payment on family-time early today will hopefully reap huge GW2 dividends for the rest of the weekend. It’s either that, or inform the wife and kids that it’s over.

I wondered about this. I didn’t play any of the betas, but when I was playing the starting area of Asura last night, all I saw was HORDES of little long eared folk with a smattering of other races moving like a swarm of bees as random audio clips sputtered out from NPCs. It was chaos. I think there was a mix of dynamic and static quests going on, but I could not tell.
Unfortunately, it reminded me a lot of the launch of Burning Crusade for WoW. The landscape was bare accept player models and a sea of name plates flowing apart and together like some kind of animated ink blot test. Not a mob to be found, and any that spawned were quickly hauled down by the hungry player base clogging the Draenei zone.
The Asura area definitely felt that way and made anything GW2 is doing to try to do invisible to me as it just played like any other crowded MMO launch.

I’m pretty much done for the day. The server issues are incredibly frustrating. Every time I zone I get disconnected, and it can take 10-15 tries to get back in, each one requiring a client relaunch, etc. Sucks.

If you buy via GMG you can’t play till the 28th, right?
Aside from a hard crash today I played for nearly two hours without problems (on EBay). Did the escort to Beetletun escort mission and there was some AoE that killed pretty much everyone in the group. 20+ corpses everywhere. Super nasty.

I finally have my initial cast of 5 created. Still no clue which I’m going to actually, you know, play… but at least I have something created :)
Onyx the Iridescent, Male Norn Guardian
Zircon the Xanthous, Male Sylvari Elementalist
Jade the Prismatic, Female Human Mesmer
Garnet the Sanguine, Male Charr Engineer
Topaz the Chromatic, Female Norn Ranger
Still might switch out the guardian for a warrior - not sure. And not positive I’ll keep the engineer as a charr (they run funny). I think I’m happy with the others. The Sylvari was a surprise… he looks cooler than I expected.

Enjoying my time so far got a necro to level 8 and unlocked all weapon abilities. The class isn’t really grabbing me, was hoping to make it a bit more direct damage and life drain. Trying a human warrior now.

I’ve played for about 90 minutes, but I have no clue what’s going on. I finally got a handle on the weapon/offhand skills after I hit level 4 as a sylvari ranger. Any idea why I suddenly have red streaks going up and down my arms?
Time to take a break and read the manual.
