When I tried world pvp I had some 10v10s that were lag free. Didn’t get in any larger skirmishes than that.
Well, I tried switching server to Blacktide from Farshiver Peaks (EU) and that helped a great deal…
Yes, all of the WvW bonuses apply to PvE. On any single skill that multi-hits a target the damage numbers will show you the total damage inflicted. So the number you’re seeing is indeed a total.

Okay, thanks. That is somewhat depressing as I’m not doing nearly as much damage as i thought I was :(.
I think they are still messing around with world vs world. The servers we are fighting are constantly changing, and with the massive load of people due to the recent launch, probably not going too well… Id wait a week before making any serious judgement.
As mentioned upstream, Engineers don’t have the same ability to swap weapons that most other classes do (which is what it sounds like you’re trying to do).
Instead, the Engineer mechanism uses the kits in your utility slots (grenades, bombs, flamethrower, elixir gun) that, when invoked, give you a new set of weapon abilities (the 1-5 skills). So while most classes have two weapon sets they swap between, Engineer can have 4 (if they use 7 through 9 for weapon kits).
So the bottom line is that you have to choose either Rifle or pistol/offhand for your core weapon set. If you really want to use both you can manually swap between them by equipping them when you’re out of combat.
Also when I went to create a new character, it goes all the way to naming and then says it could not connect to the login server and to check my firewall. I can go from desktop to playing on my engineer. Is this a load issue or do I really have a settings problem?
Yesterday they were having a lot of issues with their login server, and I think that’s what you were seeing here (I had this happen to me also once). I suspect that the problem will be solved soon if it hasn’t been already.

My favorite is to swap between pistol/dagger and shortbow. Shortbow is, I think, a must have because it’s the only decent area-of-effect damage that the thief can dish out and you are often fighting groups of foes. The pistol/dagger in turn gives you a good combination of damage, mobility and utility.
- Your auto-attack causes bleed.
- Body Shot causes vulnerability which is a great way to boost damage output
- Shadow Strike lets you escape or kite an enemy
- Dancing Dagger cripples multiple foes so it’s another great kiting skill
- Cloak and Dagger gives you stealth
Game runs good today but this might change later in the day.
Level 11 Charr warrior here.
Some of the jumping puzzles are insane (especially if you are a huge Charr). Just managed to do the one with the chest at the end in Lion Arch with the help of some human. Just to find the start of it is a challenge.
Edit: Now that I have written this, I can’t log in anymore, gah!
Well, back to Dark Souls…

This is one great game! Everything just hangs together, and the Norn Starting area is just beautiful! Loving it! Well goodbye stupid Vanguard and EQ2 - You are not on the list anymore!

Stuck on a Norn starting line, a bunch of ice imps appear (8?) and just wreck my thief. I finally managed to kill them all last night using cheese respawn tactics, retreating into a house, etc but everything was broken equipment wise and I don’t know how many of those HP reduction buffs I had afterwards.
Of course it didn’t matter, because after that another wave with a different composition spawned and another after that. I couldn’t beat the third wave because it’s some veteran imp who spawns more imps that act like homing bombs and just one hit from them or him takes 2/3rd of my life.
I am good at dodging the ice bullets and not standing in the red rings of death but I can’t see beating it. The last guy is a single target, which is my specialty as a thief, but the damage he outputs is beyond me.
So level up right? I did. Apparently the instance downlevels you back! Awesome.

I’m finding my thief is a bit squishy as well actually.

Up to this point I had been taking that as a challenge and having fun with it. I liked how dodge and movement increased my lifespan but this encounter just wreaks me.
The only thing I don’t like design wise are the platforming elements, as the controls just don’t seem tight enough for them.
The other thing I don’t like, and it’s more from bugs, is how hard it can be to play with friends with not being able to join the right zone etc.
Is this a personal story instance you’re talking about? If so there’s a couple of things you can do:
-
Sounds like you’re taking a lot of condition damage. Do you have any way to remove conditions (I have no idea, as I’ve never played a thief). Also, is there a way you can change your strategy or tactics? Maybe some other skillset or utility skill will help.
-
Level up some more in the world. This will increase your power and potentially your gear, so even though you’re downleveled you’ll still be more powerful.
-
Invite someone to join you. You can have multiple people in a story line quest, and though I’ve never done it, I have heard the mobs do not scale so it might make completing it a lot easier.
All that said, I’ve also heard that Thieves are pretty squishy, so maybe it’s just a factor of you being squishy?
Hope some of this helps; I know it can be frustrating to be stuck in one of those story quests.

Thieves are really squishy. I played one during a beta, and had all sorts of issues in the story quests that I don’t experience as an elementalist.

I didn’t realize this was launching on the 28th. If I buy it today can I jump right in?
Squishiness is relative. Get some gear with vitality and toughness and you will be fine. There is always a balance to find between damage and survivability.
And yes, leveling up helps even with downscaling. Your stats will be maxed out, you will have different stats (if you choose to stack toughness, for example), you will have more utility slots, which can be a game changer, especially earlier in the game.
Love, love the game. It’s so awesome on so many levels. I played till 6am two nights in a row, I have never done that with any of the games before. Love it.

Yep, personal story.
- My thief seems custom built to remove these conditions. The ice slow they inflict is removed as soon as it hits me.
- I gained another level and it made it a tiny bit easier to get to the end, but I still can’t beat the last guy. My companions drop like flies the instant they are raised again.
- Never! This is probably the solution but I am not going to do it; I hate grouping these days because I have to drop the game constantly and with little to no warning.
Two hits and I am dead. One hit and I am dead after the armor breaks. I can get to the end wave now with no deaths so my equipment and allies are preserved, but I just can’t beat the last guy yet.
The game is surprising me with how good it is. I did not play in the beta, and haven’t played GW since, well, forever; I knew next to nothing about it but, hearing good buzz, picked it up yesterday. I’ve tried a Human Elementalist, a Sylvari Thief, and an Asura Warrior (yeah, I know), and they’re all really different. I’m still unsure about how all the ‘overflow’ stuff works, in terms of grouping (my wife will want to get this I’m sure and so we’ll be duoing sometime soon), and I have no idea what I’m doing, really, but it sure is pretty. Seems like a nice combo of the good parts of Rift, Warhammer, and other stuff.

What do the little triangles on the map mean?
Are they supposed to fill up like the hearts do?
I go to where the triangles are shown but do not always see something happen etc (should something happen)?
