Yup, I believe it was something similar in GW1?
But their technology is very impressive. I just hope we can get rid of the population overflow eventually - though that solution is also very smart.
The biggest thing about the combat for me right now is the fact that you can hit multiple enemies with a sword swing and that you don’t have to select an enemy specifically to hit him.
I was plowing through hordes of ghosts yesterday in a dynamic event with my Charr warrior’s great sword and it was glorious. I fealt like death incarnate. With one swing I would finish like 4 enemies at once sometimes. Something like this can make MMO combat fun.
The sound effects also help but they appear to lag a bit or sometimes do not come out at all.
Yup, that’s right. The dungeons are something like
30: Ascalonian Catacombs (in the Charr zone… as above)
40: Caduceus’s Manor (in the town of Beetletun, in Queensdale)
50: Twilight Arbor (in Caledon Forest)
then there’s dungeons for levels 60, 70, 78 and 80 (2 different ones at 80). So 8 total.
You get an email when you hit the target level, and it has a “show me” button that will display the dungeon entrance on a map when you click it. Pretty cool.
All of the dungeons have a “story mode” which you go to at the level above. Then they have an “explorable mode” which is 5 levels higher (so the first one has story mode at 30 and explorable mode at 35).
To be honest, I’ve done the level 30 one and the story mode is ok but not terribly challenging (not to say you won’t die because fire is evil!). The explorable modes are designed to be a lot more difficult. New areas of the dungeon open up and you get different bosses.
And of course since you get downscaled to the instance level if you’re above it, you will find them challenging whenever you do them.
Note that the levels for the dungeons are not absolute minimums : I did the first dungeon once with someone at level 29.
I keep getting the validate email message when I log in, but the link they send me variously refuses to work at all, or says it’s expired or something. Doesn’t seem to affect anything else though.
I had to have them resend the email a few times, but it eventually worked.

We spent 15-20 very frustrating minutes trying to get in the same overflow phase last night to no avail. Knock on wood, but after the first new client push I was able to successfully use Join In… twice. No idea what they were fixing with the patches last night, but I’m hoping this was one of the things they took care of.

Don’t think this has been posted yet, but for those using nVidia cards, beta driver 306.02 has been released. Looks like it’s primarily focused on fixing performance issues in a few games including GW2. Supposedly the current non-beta WHQL drivers have some serious frame rate issues with the game.

About to start this tonight-
Question: How does your PvE progress influence your PvP character? From the really crappy online manual, it says that all your skills and items are changed when entering PvP, and you can spend PvP rewards on better PvP equipment.
Does PvE matter at all when it comes to PvP?
If you are talking about sPvP, it’s completely separate from PvE. When you get there at any level, you are upleveled to 80, you get all your class’ skills, including all utility and elite skills. You get lvl 80 gear and you can change it at the sPvP vendors. You level up sPvP ranks IIRC and you get new badass-looking gear with the same stats, you so you get to look cooler but you won’t roflstomp people with your new “Huge Shoulders of Awesomeness”. There are also special sPvP lockers to store your sPvP gear, since you can’t put it in your bank. You also have all 70 trait points available to you.
sPvP stands for Structured PvP.
In WvW, you are upscaled to lvl 80 but you have only your unlocked skill slots, skills, traits, etc. “Upscaled” means that if you are a well geared lvl 15, you will become a well geared lvl 80 and sucky gear at lvl 15 will result in a sucky lvl 80 character. All your PvE progress and stuff is with you in WvW and vice versa - stuff you loot in WvW will be level appropriate for the “lvl 15” you and you can take it back to PvE.

Is that correct regarding the gear? I had just assumed it was some flatline value regardless of what you had equipped. Interesting.

Anyone else unable to get back in after the new build?
Funny, I find it extremely hard to stop playing. Yesterday, my friend and I played till 2 am and decided to finish for the day. “Let’s just get that skill point nearby”. Oh, look there is some escort event going on right next to the skill point, let’s quickly finish it. Oh, we finished the escort, let’s just protect the NPC while he is doing his stuff. Holy cow, WTF is that thing?!!! Huge freaking fire elemental kicked asses of like 20 people and now we have to kill it.
… 45 minutes later …
“So, let’s just get that skill point nearby?” :)
I like how you set a rough goal, a target on a map, you go in that direction and all kind of shit starts happening around you. This is the first MMO in a long long time, where I get that exploration excitement. I found so many cool little areas, it’s very rewarding to just go and explore.
Oh it’s 100% correct. Eric Flannum (GW2 designer) clarified how it works on page 95. Here is the link: http://www.quartertothree.com/game-talk/showpost.php?p=3203294&postcount=2830

Ah, gotcha, I must confess to not following this thread as close as I should have since the game launched!
And I agree with you about how the game really just draws you in. I go out to grab some more crafting materials and end up in some pretty crazy adventures.
Yeah, I have to will myself away from doing the dynamic events sometimes or I’d never stop.
I also didn’t realize every zone has an “epic” boss. I fought such a boss in the human zone yesterday and ohhhh my god was it badass. There must have been at least 50 people fighting it. :D
Yup, basically the WvW scaling works exactly like it did in SWtOR for their Warzones. It’s an excellent way of making low-levels competitive.
I stumbled on this interesting architecture/city planning post yesterday. I don’t think I saw it posted here yet…

It’s the MMO equivalent of “Just one more turn…”. I have the same problem.

Remember today is the actual launch day, so expect server population to at least double. They’re likely to have additional capacity issues.
