If you’re getting those password reset emails it might be worth at least making sure your password is strong and unique. From the look of it some Chinese hackers have been plugging email addresses into that to verify they are valid accounts, and then trying to break the password if the reset password email goes out.

The mesmer has to get in first.

Mesmers have a utility skill called Portal. You cast it on the ground and have 60 to seconds to to cast it again at another point - It then opens a portal between both points for 12 seconds.

the idea is that you open one end safetly behind your walls, attack the enemy siege engines as a group and if thigns turn hairy or the spell is about to expire you open the portal and warp safelt back behind the keep walls. Repeat as neccesary.

It’s fun :)

I was thinking more on defense.

Makes sense. Thanks, Stridergg.

It does seem like the sort of class I usually enjoy.

Thanks! Being only level 5 in the starting Charr area, maybe I haven’t seen the capitol yet. I only got to play for a bit last night and this morning, and then I got swept up in exploring and running events, so I probably just need to take a moment to orient myself and look at the map.

When you exit the first tutorial mission thing (where you fight the ghost of Duke Whatshisname, in the tombs), the capital should be behind you. Basically, it’ll be right by the first waypoint you start at and is called the Black Citadel.

That’s awesome, JPR.

At first while I was reading about you doing this, my reaction was, “that’s crazy”. But then it occurred to me that I’ve been doing something similar with crafting. I figure ArenaNet expects players to use wikis and whatnot to figure out recipes, but I have no desire to alt-tab to a wiki or finger my iPad while I’m playing. So I’ve just been gathering different ingredients and messing around blindly. I’m sure I’m missing the optimal path to crafting xp – which is considerable, BTW! – but I don’t really care. I’m just having fun messing around to see what happens. Oh, look, I made sage stuffed mushrooms.

It sounds like you’re taking a similar approach to world progression. I’m tempted to try that myself, especially now that story missions are dragging me across entirely new parts of the world I wouldn’t have otherwise visited.

Have you tried this? Because it’s not supposed to work.

Mesmer’s portal can only teleport you to a place you can normally walk to. That’s why it won’t work with jumping puzzles - if you need to jump to get somewhere, you can’t teleport there.

The only thing I am not sure about is whether keep’s entry portal is considered as one of the things that break mesmer portals. Haven’t tested it yet.

Besides, once you cast the entry (the 2nd) portal, it has pretty short duration. Pretty much the only way to evacuate an entire group is if you announce it ahead of time over some voice com and the group gathers on you before you cast it. Under most WvW conditions, it’s not a very realistic proposition.

When I was playing a mesmer, I found that portal spell to be very gimmicky. Very cool in theory but hard to find a useful real world application.

[edit] Don’t get me wrong, the portal spell can be extremely useful and can be used to organize “hit and run” operations. Even if you can’t port inside the keep (which I am not sure about), you can still set up the exit portal far away from the “target” and port there for safety. But it will definitely require a “pre-made” group of friends, a voice com application and a lot of organization/coordination to pull it off.

That’s exactly how I’m approaching crafting as well. I feel like they put enough information in-game that I don’t feel as though I need a Wiki, since I’m not just fumbling around blindly. I mean, you can hover over any mat and see if it’s used by your profession, and once you load a mat into a Discovery slot, it’ll grey out anything that can’t be used in combination. I feel like that’s enough to go off of. Sure, I won’t get all the recipes this way, but I think it was stated that they expect you to learn only around 25% of the available recipes while leveling up a tradeskill. That’s fine by me, it gives me more things to play around with once I hit L80.

Thanks!

I had a huge moment of disorientation when the cut scene ended because it said I was in a queue to get to the map rigth after the scout walks you through the area. Then my map looked different from the area I seemed next to. I was in the level 5-7 area for a little bit before I teleported back to another waypoint and found the level 2-4 stuff. I’ll check out crafting, I think it sounds pretty fun, and my back packs are filling up with what I assume are crafting mats.

Just to make sure you know a useful tip, open your inventory. See the gear icon thing in the top right of the inventory screen? Click on it and select “Deposit All Collectibles”. It’ll send all crafting materials to your bank, regardless of where you’re located. Note that crafting materials are stored in their own “Collectibles” tab in your bank.

That is amazing!!

Waded through some of the Reddit thread and it was awesome.

2 questions from coming from WoW though:

  1. Is it possible to create your own channel where only people who know the name can join like in WoW?
That way you can do your own little foul-talking chat with like-minded friends.

  2. Can’t you ignore people by right clicking on their name in chat and choose “ignore” like in WoW? I only reported gold sellers in WoW and the other idiots were simply ignored.

Im pretty sure that the best way to do crafting is to just do random things. If you just grind the same things, you will use way more resources then makig new stuff. Plus you get an exp bonus!

Last night’s PVP was great fun, but a little too chaotic at times. Voice chat/coordination is a vital part of making the WvW gameplay fun, I think.

I recommend we try RaidCall. It’s a free voice program which you can download here:

http://www.raidcall.com/

I set up a Qt3 group with raidcall just now. It’s called QuarterToThree.

When you start it up to install, you’ll have to do the usual–email addy and a user name. Then search for QuarterToThree. (No period, btw.) It may take you a few searches (it’ll say no such group exists; keep trying, I assure you we’re out there.)

I set up three “Rooms” for chat, one for general chatting, and one each specific for PVP and Dungeon groups (if we need more, it’s easy to create more rooms.) I’ll happily add Tom to the admin list with me if we can get him to log in. ;)

Er, I know you say to keep trying and remain patient, but even after twenty minutes RaidCall is still failing to locate “QuarterToThree” in searches. I’ve closed and relaunched and looked at their FAQ and bug forum for info, nada. (Not sure I’ll use the app anyway myself, but it could be handy to have loaded and ready just in case I need to for some reason.)

I second the use of RaidCall. My girlfriend used to have a Ventrilo server that we used for WoW but we made to switch to RaidCall a couple of years back and it seems just as good, if not better in some respects. I’ve just now put in my application to join the group. I’m leaving town tomorrow for the weekend but when I get back I’ll look you guys up.

Edit: Weird. After restarting RaidCall, it downloaded an update and now a search for QuarterToThree doesn’t show up for me either.

Try searching for the group id #:

Yup, works for me now. :)
