And without any need to rush to do any of that stuff, since there isn’t a subscription fee, that’s huge for me. I never feel like I’m “wasting my time” in this game, both because it provides rewards for every activity and because I don’t have that monthly fee hanging over my head.

Yeah I found the mini dungeon in the human lands what a blast! If there are unfilled spots on your map in a zone you think you have completed you should explore!

It really is amazing what they have accomplished. There are 3 different games here that they could have sold for $50 each. The WvWvW stuff is pretty complex, there is siege warfare, supply chains, NPC events etc. yet it all seems to work just fine out of the box. I don’t think there has ever been a game that has made it work this fluidly without years of patching.
sPvP is a full fledged MOBA with a progression system, ranks and tournaments (observor mode will come eventually too I think).
PvE, I don’t have to go into since it’s been mentioned a lot here already.
This is the game I have been waiting for ever since WAR/DAOC gave me a taste of what might be possible.
Seriously, this is my biggest problem right now. I originally planned to make an asura necromancer as my main. Done, no problem. Oh, but the thief videos looked pretty cool too, so I rolled a human thief. Two characters, two different play styles…again, easy to manage.
But then I saw some mesmers running around, and the play style looked interesting. So now I have a mesmer too. And I have a friend who wants to level together, and I really enjoyed playing an elementalist during the beta, so now I have an elementalist. And then there’s that one empty character slot, and wow that flamethrower looks really cool, so…charr engineer.
So now my character slots are maxed out, and that’s good because I really can’t think of another class I want to play. I mean, the guardian does look interesting, but that’s it. Okay, maybe a warrior, just to mix it up a little. How much does it cost to add character slots again? And where’s my credit card?
So yeah, five characters, with levels around 18, 10, 8, 8, 6. I keep wanting to switch, but I really think I need to focus on one for a little bit, just to make progress and see some of the mid-game content. But it’s so tempting to keep switching off!
I played Guardian a fair bit during the beta’s and it is not your typical stodgy tank and spank. In typical ArenaNet fashion they have given us a class just as exciting and varied to play as all the other classes in the game. The Guardian special effects in the game are awesome! Which reminds me I need to buy another three character slots tonight to roll my last three classes. ;)
I hate you so much. You are no help whatsoever. Gem store, here I come!
I finally got a chance to play with my dedicated gamer buddy last night. It was a so-so experience.
Early on i went to town to get my greatsword from the bank. BIG MISTAKE. Now i’m stuck in the overflow for 10-15 minutes. Things like this happened a few times before we told arenaNet to fuck themselves and just stayed in the overflow, but with the annoying “DO YOU WISH TO GO TO THE MAIN SERVER!!?!??!?” spam.
The whole overflow instance stupidity is certainly a pain in the ass if you attempt to play with a small number of real life friends instead of just a large number of people where any 4-5 will do.
On the plus side, greatsword mesmer looks really damn cool.
It’s a necessary evil. It’s better than getting locked out with a “server full” message and having to wait in a queue and not being able to play the game.
But at least once i am on the server, i am on, instead of having to worry about whether i’m on the same server as my party every time i zone.
Well atleast you can play with people on other servers on the overflow :p
Until we zone and i have to play marco polo trying to get on the same server :p
Well, I’ve been playing for a few days, solo for the most part, occasionally connecting with groups I’ve found organically while exploring the world. I only have my main alt (Sylvari Thief) and it’s enough for now. I’d like to play with Qt3 folks more but haven’t been available when things were happening, so I’ll keep trying.
GW2 is in my personal Top 3 MMO games, along with City of Heroes and Earth and Beyond. I’ve played many other MMOs but few have captured me so easily or pleasantly or, it seems, so effortlessly. I’d played GW1 a little, but it just didn’t grab me like GW2 has for some reason.
The subscription cost discouragement factor that Mark Asher was describing so well upthread may be a significant factor for me; typically, if I’m not having an amazing time, when I hit a certain point in the game and after I’ve paid for a month or two, I’ll start to seriously question why I’m continuing to invest both my time and money in the game. $5/month, I’d probably dismiss the question and pay. $15/month, not so much. Without the factor of cost, it seems I’m freed up to consider the other benefits more objectively. And as I look at it closely, I think this is the kind of game that I’m sure I will be able to return to again and again over the next year or two or more, even if I need to take breaks every now and then (which I don’t yet anticipate happening for at least a couple of weeks from now, minus brief ones here and there).
The huge disparity between how much real world money I have to spend on Guild Wars 2 and how much depth and variety and the sheer amount of content that is available to me today, given all of the different alts I have yet to create and experience – and all of this hassle free – are enormous factors for my personal psychographic. I don’t know if this was a happy accident or if someone on the dev/marketing team really knew their stuff, but they pulled it off and then some.
So you didn’t try to use the “Join” command? We used it tonight to get together before starting a dungeon, worked flawlessly. Put us all in the same overflow server.
Rightclick the character portrait and click “Join”.
Easy.

Yes, you can do that on overflow servers, but then you get the “do you wish to enter the main server” popups every 15 minutes.

Maybe me and my friend were just lucky, but when we were in a party on the same overflow, we always got the popup to go to the main server at the same time.

Our group, up to four, always get the pop up at the same time if we are in a party. Only during during the initial days did we get stuck in overflow hell… hasn’t happened this week at all.
I don’t even understand the overflow. I want to be on my home server, but it never asks me if I want to go there. Instead it asks me if I want to go to some region. I’m already in some region. What does asking me if I want to go another region mean?
Anyway, I don’t care as I’m leveling. I’m almost ready to jump into WvWvW after I make another level and can wear the shoulders I already have. I assume overflow isn’t an issue there. You either get in or wait. Is that right?

Yes. There is a queue. Unfortunately, it can take a rather long time sometimes.
Jute is my main bottleneck as well with my armorsmithing. Especially playing a Charr. The starting zone is mostly Ascalon ghosts and creature mobs. None drop the little bag thingies which contain jute. There is only one spot with some Ogres that drop those. I decided to play through the elvish (or whatever the treehuggers are called) starter zone to see if it has more humanoid mobs and it has. That has helped. But it is still a big bottleneck.
