I’m (currently) homed to Jade Quarry. I’ve yet to get into WvWvW at the times I play. Not that WvWvW is the be-all of gameplay for me, but…
Thanks, glad to see the notes!
Went back to messing with my greatsword ranger.
When are developers of mmorpgs going to learn that giving bosses “FUCK YOU MÊLÉES” abilities is NOT fun.
i was doing this shaman boss in a huge dynamic event in the silverpeak mountains and he has this pbaoe with no warning that just instantly kills everyone around him. I didn’t even know what happened. I just see myself and a bunch of mêlée attacking him from behind and the next thing i see EVERY mêlée is dead. The first time i was lucky enough to get revived, but it happened again! I thought i missed the warning the first time but it was again nothing and then BOOM FUCK YOU MÊLÉES!
What am i even supposed to do against this crap? Just used range attacks all of the time?
I’m all for bosses that require active movement, but something that all mmorpgs (since they all basically fall in to this trap for a long time until they fix it) eventually learn is that you can’t expect people to play mêlée builds/classes if you specifically fuck them over.

I specifically ran around to multiple stores to pick up a hard-copy because of all of the downloadin’
Starting to lose my momentum. I don’t know why really, but it’s getting tougher to stay into the game. Mystified.

After a decade and a half of this type of nonsense I’d say they will never learn.
Too many years of bending over and taking it from stupid design decisions and unbalanced melee gameplay have morphed me from a primary melee player to a ranged player in MMOs. As much as I’d like to play melee classes I’m just not the glutton for punishment I used to be.

That’s what I like about GW2 though. Even melee classes typically have ranged options available. While you may not be cranking out top DPS on a melee-unfriendly boss as a result, you can take that time to fill a support/ranged role instead and show off your melee DPS greatness another time.

Agreed - Every class has tools to be either ranged or melee and I am sure thats why you can swap weapons like that. Ranged and mobility is a MUST against some bosses, and as a ranger you are very well suited for that.
Nothing wrong with making bosses you dont just stand in front and hit 2 buttons.
I wonder how well-balanced some of the events are? I did one tonight that was a skill point event and I don’t think there’s any way I could have soloed it. I had to defeat a veteran NPC and his 3-4 henchmen.
So I wonder if in a couple of months someone’s trying to do this and there are no other players around, is it doable? We get downleveled so it’s not like we can make another five levels and then come back and do it.
It reminds me a bit of the issue Warhammer had with Public Quests after the game had been out for a couple of months. Some you couldn’t do alone.
Anyway, it’s not a big deal for most events, but players are going to want to get those skill points.

It doesn’t have to be a choice between “stand in front and hit two buttons” and “instant melee death with no warning”. If you want people to stay out of melee range give them visual cues or enemy emotes when the special attack is coming. Having to scroll through your combat log to find out why you fell over dead is just lame.
Further, unless there are mechanics that force range users to fight as melee there is no justification for the opposite. Just about every MMO I’ve ever played put restrictions on the melee in terms of making them run out of range while letting casters stand in front (at range) and hit two buttons. If you are going to make my Thief stand back and ping with a bow, you need to make my Elementalist move up and attack with a dagger, otherwise you are just fucking with melee because that’s what every other MMO developer has done over the years. The whole “we want to avoid melee faceroll” is a jacked up defense considering most faceroll classes in MMOs are casters.

I am willing to bet that there ARE visual cues in the monster you were talking about. There has been in every other boss I’ve seen so far in GW2. Also, you can be revived by team members so its not like its game over when it happens. You learn a bit more about the boss and know how to approach it next time, which is a fine mechanic.
As for ranged - My other main(haha, yeah, I suffer from Altholism) is a hunter, and I certainly cannot stand still and let my pet tank in most cases. If I do that, I get hit and die.
Edit: Also, some monsters are either less resistant to, or return ranged attacks of various kinds.
There’s actually a very tough fight in the caledon forest where periodically your character gets transformed into various animals during the encounter. All of which force you to get in melee range to do damage.
They certainly are not afraid to mix things up without notice.

Just thought I’d put some cool pictures here… I don’t think they are spoilers of anything though. I just found them.
No spoilers, but it was a damn cool scene.
random event I ran into.
I’ve discovered GW2 doesn’t like my dual monitor setup. If I hold down the right mouse button while the cursor is on the edge of the screen (leading to my other monitor) the program loses focus and dumps me back to desktop! Very frustrating in the middle of a firefight as I’m mouselooking.
Also, I’d advise anyone against creating a large character model. It leads to some frustrating camera problems in tight spaces and around vegetation. It makes some of the jumping puzzles in caverns a lot harder than they should be. On the upside, you look intimidating to Asura.
As far as downsides go, I reckon I can live with them though.

Charr does not come in size small, puny human.

In regards to melee I agree it is a bit too risky ATM but most if not all classes do more dps in melee so it is currently a bit of risk/reward.
Ditto. Maybe I’m just not seeing/hearing the chatter, but is BFF doing any organized WvW? I’m in the ET zone. How about you?
