I was clearly wrong about the relative popularity of Mesmer and Elementalist (from the most recent official blog post).

Could someone explain what the symbols are, particularly for the character classes? For example, what is the butterfly symbol that is really low?

In order:
Engineer
Thief
Elementalist
Warrior
Mesmer (the butterfly you mentioned)
Ranger
Guardian
Necro
Amazed the Guardian is as popular as the thief. Support classes are normally way down the list. A testament to Anet’s class design, that. I played 10 levels of guardian before stopping because I didn’t feel clever enough, though I loved it. Will definitely revisit it when I’ve got a better grip on the game.
I’m just happy that so many players are members of the Wu Tang Clan.

and it takes 4 chars to cover all 8 crafts, so they even give you a spare char slot.

What are the race symbols? Norn, Charr, Asura, Sylvari, Human? The graphic leaves a little to be desired in the way of labeling.

Well considering the fact that a single character can max every craft (and switch between them), I believe that they gave you five characters slots for each of the races. I wish they gave you a spot for each of the professions, but they have to make money somehow.
Considering the fact that I have spent 65 hours playing - with some idling - and do not have a single character above 17 (5 characters between 10 and 17), I will probably throw them some cash for character slots at later date.
Gold->Gem exchange rates have actually been such that if you have a decent income - either from a high level character, or gathering and selling (rather than using) high-demand low end mats, you can actually get character slots with gold without that much fuss.

This has been my experience as well. If you wait for the best rates (check gw2tp, usually around 12-2am eastern) you can get 350+ gems for 1 gold, making it a shade over 2 for an extra slot. I expect this number to keep dropping as more gold enters the economy and the novelty of the cash shop wears off.

i still find that amazing. That means, that a decent MMO player can upgrade to deluxe edition without much hassle, since thats 2000 gems.
Haha I saw that and thought the same thing.
Be on you like a house on fire! Smoke ya!

So happy to hear I’m not the only one :) I keep reading about folks with level 80 characters already bored, and I haven’t even “seen” the game yet!

Thanks for the graphic, Fishbreath and for the key, Cobra. This info is super timely for me because I leveled my main to 41 last night and decided to roll a second character, but wanted to pick an unpopular profession (and, maybe, an unpopular race).
Thought it might be helpful to others add a key to that graphic, so I did a very crude edit – including the Professions and Races as well, and ripping off both the wiki and the original source (which for some reason lacked a key of its own).

Also relevant to people planning out new characters (via):

Why isn’t huntsman extremely useful for rangers? We love our bows.

Oh, it does it based off the numbers. So maybe rangers have more avaliable
Melee weapons then ranged.

The full post explains: It is based on how many slots it can fill. For a ranger, leatherworker fills more slots overall than huntsman. “Very” useful is still plenty useful, of course.
