I figured he bought it with cold, hard cash, but honestly I don’t even know if you can buy gold.

Sorry, gems, not gold. :)

I grabbed the digital deluxe recently which yielded gems, spent most of them and had some left over which I stupidly blew on sunglasses. :)

Well, indirectly. You buy gems with cash (US $1.25/100gems), then can sell the gems for gold. http://gw2spidy.com/gems has a nice chart for the going exchange rates. I’ve been obsessing over it today, because I can nearly afford a new character slot if the gem cost stops inflating like mad. Need that mesmer slot…

So nobody here has gotten gold spam mail yet? I have. To clarify, not that I am accusing anyone of buying gold from spammers. Just saying it’s out there.

Why would you buy gold from spammers when it’s for sale from ArenaNet? Is it cheaper or something?

I’ve gotten two ingame emails and reported them both. I got a gold spam /tell at one point and reported that. I almost never have general chat enabled, so I can’t say for sure if there’s any gold seller spam there.

It’s about half price from what I’ve seen on the official forums.

I have had 2-3 pc of gold spam in mail daily.

One of the things you might try in your Hero panel (‘H’ key) is to uncheck the checkbox by your helmet, and see if that helps.

My Guardian came with a kickass default way of showing off her hair: In a red bandanna pulling it off her face, and the rest of hit flowing down her back. Really sexy.

And then I pick up my first helm, and she looks like Dork McSoldierstein. So, I turned off the display of the helmet, and we’re all back to normal.

Nice pic. I have tended to roll all humans and norns to this point. Am about to start a mesmer, and was going to go human female but the female light armor is maybe a bit too light for those odd times when the wife/kids see me playing. Going to switch to human male mesmer and swap my male guardian to something like that (I know, why roll a female at all - just for the variety since everything is already human or norn…)

Thanks, mystery, but for some reason, Gem Store sunglasses are unique in that they occupy your face on the “Town Clothes” display, but still appear in the place of whatever combat face year you’re wearing and retain the combat face gear item’s stats while hiding it. So unchecking that box while wearing sunglasses/mask on simply hides everything. Seems to me they would need to create upper/lower boxes for eyegear and mouth gear, respectively, but since that’s purely cosmetic I think it’s doubtful that we’ll see it unless they’re working on other cosmetic changes too. Similarly, if you get a beanie or a top hat, those will do the same thing.

Edit: I was going to suggest that they offer a Preview feature, but they have one. Just not on the front page of the Gem Store. You have to click into the “Style” category first.

Love the pic.

That is just a hair style.

When it comes to character design in fantasy settings, I subscribe to the statement in White Wolf’s Exalted book about why helmets don’t affect armor stats (paraphrasing): “We don’t want to make anyone feel like they have to equip a helmet. A helmet is a poor substitute for an interesting hairstyle.”

Giant shoulderpads, on the other hand, are a must. I can’t imagine turning them off, at least for a heavy armor character.

Tournies are played as 5v5 in a 3-round single elimination format. First map is Forest of Niefhel, 2nd is Legacy of the Foefire, and 3rd is Battle of Kyhlo.

It’s about 10x the experience of non-tournament sPvP. These maps flat out were designed for 5v5 and not 8v8, and the reduced number makes a lot of builds and playstyles that are not feasible in 8v8 become perfectly viable or even necessary. Being an unmovable object that can single-handedly hold a point against 2 people for 20-30 seconds, even if you aren’t going to kill anyone, that actually is extremely valuable in tournament play.

An 8v8 game winds up having mini-zergs flailing around the maps. It’s not uncommon to see 4 guys on a team running together curb-stomping everything. That’s just about suicide in tournaments, where the other team will simply avoid and cap points all around you, because when you’ve got 5 you’re going to have to divide them up to cover the points, and you’ll need to actually coordinate offense and defense.

I’ve pretty much stopped bothering with the sPvP browser altogether. It’s easy enough to just queue yourself up for a tourney and have a game start in less than a minute.

I know it’s a gameplay thing in MMOs but it irks me to know that all these badass characters are currently wearing earrings, necklaces and bangles.
Tell me again how a pair of earrings makes you more powerful.

If you’ll tell me how my choice of hatwear, gloves, and boots do the same?

There is treasure from the Black Lion chests that allows you to combine the stats of one item and looks of another to keep a specific set of headgear for instance. Those are purchasable from the store as well.

That means, you can wear Panscopic Monocle at all times just with the stats of whatever you buy, granted you have enough of the item to swap looks.

MAGIC! (Welcome to fantasy) :D

…checking to see if that name is available for my alt warrior.

A wizard did it. Duh.

Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind. Too bad I sold the monocle early on. Not seeing them on the Market but maybe a merchant will have one. Appreciate the tip though.
