Any good crafting leveling guides out there? I feel like I’m just doing random stuff and probably not using my materials efficiently. I’ve seen Jerich’s overview, but I need a real step-by-step guide.

Agree, I really have no clue what I am doing really, apparently if I want to turn silver ore or iron ore in to. As I need to be 75 to unlock them, well annoying.

I have run in to the exact same problem multiple times myself though. Depending on luck with dynamic events, you can get stuck in a content gap where you have no reputation quests to do. Then you’re forced to wander aimlessly or go to another starter area, both of which are workarounds for a real problem.
Thankfully, this seems to become less of a problem later on when the world opens up more, but it is a real one early on.
I’ve got about 7 characters to 10+ and it happened to 3.

not lvl 75 characterwise, but crafting wise :-)

This.
My daughter is always wanting me to play “Ellie”, so I have to oblige her and play GW2 while she sits on my lap to look at all the bears and jaguars.

Not really sure what you want beyond Jerich’s guide. It’s totally step by step. Basically, though. Refine stuff until you don’t get XP any more. Then build components with your refined materials. Then do discovery with the components. Rinse and repeat as you unlock new tiers of material/component.
These tips from Jerich’s guide are very good:
Tip #1: Make your refinements and components as soon as they become available.
Refinements and components only give experience for twenty five levels. You will want to front-load them as much as possible because doing so will extract the maximum experience before they go gray. I always start by doing batch refinement of everything I have collected so far and then make enough components for my discovery process. Read section D for an example of how to do this in practice.
Tip #2: Discovery is almost always better than grinding.
The reason why is that discovery yields 100% more bonus experience than grinding on a known recipe. The only reason I would grind is if you are making something that you will use (bags, gear, multiple runes, etc) or if you find an especially easy recipe (cooking and artificer have a lot of these low hanging fruit). Also note that jeweler has less recipes than the other professions. You will most likely have to make duplicates from 25-50. After this, you will have enough recipes to level with discovery. (Thank you wildclaw and Lasmrah for bringing this up)
Tip #3: You should make items appropriate to your sub-tier when possible
You may be tempted to keep leveling a Sub-Tier 1 level item once you hit level 25 because they will still yield experience. Resist the urge. Why? You will level much faster and more efficiently using the Sub-Tier 2 armor that just opened up. This will mean you will have more available fine crafting components for Sub-Tier 3. Since this is the hardest Sub-Tier to get through, you will need to save as many components as possible.
Tip #4: Be adaptable in your level strategy.
Have you been finding a ton of a specific component? Go ahead and discover one of each type of item that component can make. Are you finding an even amount of components? Cherry pick the recipes that use the least amount of materials and make one type of each of those. You should be constantly evaluating what you have available and use the appropriate materials. The main thing to watch out for is the second set of 25 points. Don’t violate Tip #3 if you can help it.

Rocket Boots: This skill is no longer usable underwater. This is a temporary change until we can figure out why players can launch themselves into the sky using this skill.
Darn, I just picked this skill up last night and didn’t even know about that feature.

Another crafting tip: Don’t be cheap about buying crafting components if you want to build your crafting levels quickly. You will level your craft skills much faster if you invest a little cash. I discovered this pretty late, having falsely assumed that most/all crafting materials would be way overpriced.

As for this bit, I’m not really sure I understand what you’re saying. But if you haven’t levelled enough to refine silver or iron ore, then work with copper.

On this front there are some totally out there anomalies in mat pricing right now. Some very high level, rare mats are way cheaper than common tier one or two mats, presumably because everyone’s levelling up their crafting.

That may be true, but when I finally bothered to check I found the copper ore and lower end jewel prices to be very reasonable.

They’re reasonable, but they’re not rational, for want of a better word. Last I checked, copper was more expensive than iron or platinum.

Well this one is obvious, i no longer collect copper all i get is silver and iron, I would like to refine it in to bars but I cannot as I need to be 75 however just refining cooper won’t get me to 75.
This means I need to spend more time levelling jewellery just so i can refine bars. I would have liked refine bars to have been a simple mechanic rather than tied to a specific craft I am doing. I mean I can mine Silver or Iron easy enough I just can’t refine it which seems odd if they level restricted mining the stuff then it would have made more sense to me, it’s not like i need to discover refining.

But the whole reason for you to refine silver at all is to make silver jewellery. The way the GW2 crafting system works, there’s no point in refining except in the context of your craft. If you don’t have a craft that uses iron, say, just sell the iron ore. There’d be no point in you refining it, as the ore would be more valuable to someone with a craft that can use it, and hence can level from refining it.

Which means that even as a level 75 jewelcrafter you will not be able to refine Iron Ore.

Copper and Gold ore are priced just above crazy go nuts levels. I found those to be the most difficult to obtain in my climb to almost-400.
I always start by doing batch refinement of everything I have collected so far and then make enough components for my discovery process.
THIS. I would jump right to the discovery process since it was fun, and presumably lose out on crafting levels. It’s fun to watch the bar rapid fire up a few levels though.
Edit: SAVE YOUR SILVER, once you are done with that tier. You can transmute 250 into 55 ish Gold, which is very helpful.

I’m confused… why would it? I’m unaware of any crafting system in a MMO which allows you to max out the skill through refinement - you need to craft something to advance your skill (or in the case of GW2, use the discovery process for big skill gains).

Oh this, so much this. I PvP with my guild, and it is such major pain in the butt to group everyone.
#1 Account name and character name are interchangeable, adding to confusion on who is who.
#2 Auto-complete because of #1 outputs 100% noise
#3 You are limited to groups, making organizing 50+ people group unnecessary complicated. This is too bad, considering some interesting tools commander has. Like drawing on minimap or map markers.
#4 There is no way to get rid of someone in the group who logged off, its reform group time :(
