I know, I’m not saying it’s “bad”, just strange and a little off-putting. I realize that I can go back and follow the chain of events, and it’s likely I will since I also need to level a bit more before moving on and following the event chain is a great way to accomplish that.

I guess coming from LOTRO as the most recent MMORPG I spent any worthwhile amount of time in I’m slowly adjusting to the paradigm shift of going from having quest stories laid out for me in walls of text and the occasional cut scene (which, granted, are present in GW2 in the personal story line) to having things happen organically around me when the situation is right for events to kick off. I’m consistantly feeling like I’m arriving late to the party, and not sure why everyone else is having so much fun doing the goofy dance, but enjoying the dancing nonetheless.

GW2 is less egocentric in design than most themepark MMOs (other than the Personal Story, obviously). The world isn’t revolving around you; instead, the world is a dynamic entity that you are an inhabitant of. You shouldn’t feel like you’re “missing something” when you find a dynamic event (or chain) already in progress. The world has things going on with or without your presence, you just happened to walk by at that particular moment in time. You’re not missing anything because anything that happened before didn’t involve you, it involved only the NPCs and the players which were there at the time. Walking in on an event in progress means you didn’t see the beginning of the event itself, but you are seeing the beginning of your involvement in it. I’ve had plenty of D&D campaigns and the like where I as a player happen upon something happening, I get involved, and it kicks off my own thread of the story. Try to look at it like that and see if that helps.

I’d also recommend talking to various NPCs and keeping your eye out as there are plenty of chains which you can trigger, if you want to see something from start to finish. A few NPCs walking around or a caravan making it’s way down the road are often more than background scenery in this game, it’s often something happening (or about to happen).

GW2 is good this way, NPCs will talk to you if you have an option to initiate something. So if you walk by NPC and hear “Excuse me, can you …” then you have an option of triggering event. Or you could just move on and go with whatever you were doing.

Its kind of nice to have it this way, as opposed, you are involved, like it or not but you will BRING 10 COW LIVERS TO ME OR NEVER GET PAST THIS POINT!!!

My biggest gripe with DEs (well, aside from the rot that leads to an ridiculous number of non-functioning events between reboots) is that most of them don’t show up at a distance. I’d like to know what DEs I could be running on a map. I don’t need to be spammed with alerts about events on the far end of the map, but it would be nice to see them when I open the map view if I have that subsection explored.

My second biggest gripe would be that the payout doesn’t scale with event difficulty or, more importantly, time. I’ve learned to skip most longer events if I’m not working on a heart, as the payout for a 15 minute event is the same as a 3 minute event. The dragon events in particular should be paying out more than standard event karma.

When you have a zone with many dynamic events working properly and spaced such that you can see enough of them at once, it’s a beautiful thing.

? The dragon events spawn big-ass chests with great rewards after the dragon dies. Have you been missing those?

Are the dragon events only in the high level areas or have I been missing them. And chests you say?? I like that!

There are world bosses (with big-ass chests) in low level areas, too. The Swamp Behemoth in Godslost Swamp is my favorite.

There’s a dragon event in Blazeridge Steppes (lvl 40-50), Sparkfly Fen (55-65) and Frostgorge Sound (70-80). They occur about every three hours. The frost dragon is the best event- it’s comprised of four quick pre-quest actions which if done promptly can bring you about 1200 karma followed by the big dragon fight which gives you another 370 karma and a huge chest which will drop about 5 or 6 items. I’ve picked up quite a few rares but most items are blues or greens.

I have not. The chest rewards on average are actually quite shit, and it doesn’t change the fact that the karma payout for the events do not scale at all with the event. Claw of Jormag, for example, is probably only a really good deal for the time on average if you show up near the end.

The best strategy for Jormag is probably to knock down the crystals for the event karma as they pay as much karma each as the entire Jormag fight and take about a minute a piece, then go grind something else until the final event is nearly over, then come back and pick up a quick gold.

One of the clues there’s a major boss event in the area is you see a boring event saying something like “all’s well, bad guys are gone” that covers a good half the region if not more. That will change to something more exciting when the boss is ready to show up. So far two out of the last four times I went to umm, the level 70-80 ice zone, the boss has been there and I got to join the huge waves of fear-stricken players rolling in and out from the boss dragon…

The first giant chest I saw was the Harathi Hinterlands (35-45) event. The first dragon I saw was in Sparkfly Fen (55-65) but the Shatterer might be earlier.

Edit: I was beat by a lot of people apparently.

Well yeah, if you want karma, run straits of devastation over and over again. You run frost dragon mostly for the loot (and yeah, if you want to cheese it and show up at the last minute you can do that). You may be able to make money faster doing something else, but it seems to drop a yellow or two about every other time and you can turn those around for ~20 silver each. And that’s pretty good.

Hmm, ok it seems I need to play more I guess. All my free time is apparently not enough!

Is the frost dragon working… because i thought it was broken?

I don’t farm the dragon, but it’s been working every time I passed by (I’m not on EBay, though). There’s also this:

Have you guys cleared Caduceus Seraph wing? Any tips? It is full of anger and remorse.

Well my Elementalist is fast approaching level 80, so I decided to roll an alt. This may seem unremarkable to some of you, but it’s not something I normally do. After 150 hours the game is still pulling me in. I ummed and ahhed for ages trying to figure out what I was going to play next, not an easy decision. In the end I thought I’d try something totally different, an asura mesmer. No idea whether it’ll click with me, but let’s find out. Besides, an asura guardian just seemed a little too incongruous.

Not on ebay? Huh? I just heard the dragon wasn’t working so our group hasn’t tried yet. Looks like we should give it a go. I enjoy the dragon events, but it’s not for the mediocre loot.

Did I get kicked from the guild or did something happen that I am not aware of? Just logged in and typed in guild chat, and I get the message that I am not in a guild. I go to the guild screen, and sure enough, not in this guild or the OO guild…

Confused…

You are probably fine and that will come back up soon:

“After the maintenance it may take up to an hour for social systems (e.g. guilds, friend’s list, chat) to settle into a stable state.”
