Or in other words, “people who don’t utilize their characters’ full potential are not viable in large scale fights”. Or any scale for that matter.
Man, you guys weren’t kidding about the Personal Story quests being lame. I went back and played through a few of them (up to my current level) and they suck. I feel like most of them played out like mediocre Neverwinter Nights mod levels.
I appreciate that they spent some time putting in some strictly SP stuff in the game, but I feel like it was sort of a wasted effort. The actual game is compelling enough even as a mostly SP guy wandering around on my own. Since there is no penalty for someone jumping in to help you on a quest or a kill, I find myself not avoiding other players like I do in other MMOs.
I do like that the Personal Story XP is scaled up to match your actual level. That’s a very nice touch.
I am quite enjoying the personal quests, at least for asura and sylvari they seem nice and thematic. What’s the problem with them?
Must be something I haven’t encountered yet.
I haven’t tried either of those races yet, but the storyline I’m on is as dull as dishwater. Go here. Now watch a conversation with some person standing in front of a generic painted backdrop. Laugh at the marrionette arm movements and head bobbing. Now go there. Kill a bunch of bad guys that spawn in. Watch another conversation. Collect reward.
The voicework is pretty dire as well. It sounds like the VO folks didn’t give a crap about this job at all.
I’m not going to bitch a lot about it since the game has so much other stuff to do that I find interesting. I do like the easy XP. I just feel like they probably could’ve spent the resources to do something else.

That sums up my position on 95% of campaign/storyline content done for video games across genres (RTS, FPS, etc - assuming the game has content other than the campaign, obviously).
I played a Norn in beta and the voice work was terrible; however I have found the quality of the Asura and Sylvari voice work to be much much higher. The Asura story I have followed the furthest (just closing in on level 50 now) so I can say that at least so far I have enjoyed it and I like the fact that it has decisions and branches.
It’s a nice occasional distracting form just wandering around the world (which is obviously also fun).

I felt that the Sylvari and Asura stories I saw where stronger than the human/Charr ones I had. Haven’t gotten far with a Norn yet, he’s serving as a mule right now.
For the Sylvari one, it really gave a really good sense of what being Sylvari was (ie/ existentially), if that makes any sense.
The Asura one just had pretty dickish antagonists that gave good motivation to chase down and bludgeon =p
But of course, even saying that, the pacing of the stories is still pretty bad, especially if you complete them while leveling. They’d probably have been better off clustering them at around certain levels rather than spacing them.
I never get tired of playing through the Sylvari starting zones, stories and all. I’ve played through all the biographical options through 25th level at least. The Asura storyline is great as long as you don’t do all three variations, 'cause there’s not that much variation, and evil backstabbing bunnies is a great gag but it only gets ya so far. I thought the Charr stories were very interesting and revealing of the culture and politics of that race. I’d say the Ash Legion storyline is my favorite.
I always end up playing humans for comedy value, 'cause the human story in these kinda games is always so self-important and morally square and GW does not disappoint on that score. The story for the Norn has yet to gel for me (I’ve only played one Norn character and to 28). It seems a little shallow–we’re all about drinking and hunting, rawr! But, again, I’ve only played the one character and it didn’t grab me.
Coming immediately from SWTOR, the stories took some getting used to. Gawd, they were just so weak compared to the loving care put into 'em in TOR. But once I got over the shock I’ve found the stories pretty engaging. And certain of the missions have been the most challenging parts of the game so far (Yeesh, some of the balance on those story quests is outrageous! Don’t do your thief’s story missions until you feel you have a DEEP understanding of all the thief can do, you will be required to use every last one of your tricks if you play through your story stuff solo).

Games get penalized pretty hard for no single-player campaigns, stories. It never made a lot of sense to me for games that people spend the majority of their time online in some sort of vs. mode.
GW2 voice acting is horrific, even some of the dyanmic events grate me. That one in the swamp with the frogs and the rat… it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard.
One of the NPCs in the Asura storyline is voiced by Felicia Day. What more could you want?

Melee are at a huge disadvantage. If they weren’t you wouldn’t have to qualify it by saying there are no melee classes. Melee have to go out of their way, and do things that range don’t have to do, to find viability in WvW.
That’s nonsense. The full potential ceiling for a melee based character is so much lower than for a ranged based character. You have to be better and try harder to get the same results, and if you put that same amount of skill and effort into a range class you’d be even better. Just because you can make something work doesn’t mean it’s working as well as it should.

I’ve only made any real progress on the human stories, and this is how I take them too. They’re fun to do every now and then, but I wouldn’t want them to make up any larger portion of the in-game to do list.
I also generally don’t have a problem with the majority of the voice acting, but there is definitely some high and low points. My wife has been doing a part of the Order of Whispers stuff helping out the Quaggans, and her main contact for that was pretty awful. I really like her partner though (Tybal or something like that).
It’s also great that they don’t take things too seriously. As HKCavalier said, these storylines in other games tend to be so serious and everyone’s just full of purpose.

You are not comprehending what we wrote. There are no melee classes in gw2. If this doesn’t grok with you I suggest you read up on the classes/professions an elementalist isn’t ranged a warrior isn’t melee.

Have to say I am enjoying pugging the dungeons in gw2. The first one was somewhat meh but I have enjoyed the rest so far. Surprisingly well mannered (though still a lot of keyboard turning) pugs as well.

I highly reccomend http://gw2lfg.com/ for finding groups. It cuts the gristle out of spamming LA map chat and jumps right into caramel-filled dungeon running goodness.
