As much as I love gw2 I do kinda wish they allowed for traditional mmo rolls. The group I play with found it hard to get into because the one player really enjoys the classic mmo healing role and I find myself missing the zen of tanking. Between rift and gw2 I am a fairly happy mmoer!

Well, with the recent sale on this at GMG, I decided to snag this. Look forward getting in to it.

Don’t those roles exist? Not traditional healing, of course, but you can create a support build out of many of the classes. And I definitely see people tanking. I’m particularly aware of it when people aren’t tanking. :)

But you’re right that they’re not hard-coded, and this can be a turn-off for people who just want a comfort food MMO. I’m always surprised to hear that, though. I am so over the trinity of tanking/healing/DPS but I still see it freakin’ everywhere. The deeper that paradigm can be buried, the better.

Hunh. Somehow or another, I neglected to actually join the Qt3 guild. How about an invite gents? You can all laugh at my low-level scrubs that will likely always remain low-level.

Ha, I knew it! You claimed we were Guild Wars buddies and I was pretty sure you were just trying to let me down gently.

-Tom

The good news is that you’re well ahead of my Achievement points. Another person you can feel superior to and laugh at!

Thanks for the invite Tom. I’m leaning towards getting it before the GMG sale expires. If I get it I’ll post my name here for sure.

The Green Man Gaming codes don’t work for Guild Wars 2, so I will be holding off for now. I know $8-10 isn’t going to break the bank, but since we are a 1 income family I try to spend my gaming dollars wisely. Since I have a ton of games I already own and Civ 5 Brave New World is just about out, I’ll keep my eye on GW2 for a later date. Thanks everyone for the input. At least I won’t need to ask these questions again when I buy it!

I played Guild Wars 2 until I got to a high enough level to do the first instance dungeon (or whatever it’s called). I couldn’t easily find people to do it with me, and basically quit then.

Is there an auto “Looking for Dungeon” feature or something similar in the game yet?

Comfort food is a good way to describe it. I prefer gw2 style more than traditional mmos but having to rely that others are confidant in a group can be a bummer. In holy trinity mmos I can make a bad group of players successful by tanking well in gw2 I end up just running around reviving everyone because most pugs just stand in fire.

Nope. Looking right at the entrance isn’t going to find you a group either. Also at this point in time, even looking in Lions Arch is unlikely to find you a group, especially for Story mode.

Why? Everyone moved to
http://gw2lfg.com/

Alternately, while the QT3 guild is kind of dead these days, if you manage to catch a few of us on, we could take you through more or less any dungeon of your choice.

And it works fine. I found a group for Ascalon Catacombs’ story mode almost instantly.

Although the real test will be finding low level fractal groups. I thought ArenaNet did something to make it easier for fractal noobs to join advanced players, but I can’t tell what it was.

-Tom

I believe there’s no level limit on characters anymore - you can do fractals of any level, but you only get the rewards for your actual level, and you only advance one level at a time (by beating any higher level fractal). Of course, the people on high level fractals may not appreciate it.

At least that’s my understanding of things, haven’t run fractals in months.

Why would the people on the high level fractals not appreciate it? If I go in as at level 2 – stop laughing! – does it somehow drag them down? We do a fractal, I go up to level 3, and they go up to their next level. Right? Or am I misunderstanding how it works? Is there some ingame resource to figure out what the heck is going on with fractals?

Also, I joined a fractal group from gw2.lfg.com with my level 40 character under the misapprehension that the levels scaled. The dudes in the group I’d joined sort of laughed and said, “Sorry, but that’s not going to work”. Do you need level 80 characters to go in? And where do I see my fractal level?

Maybe it’s not so easy to come back to Guild Wars after all!

-Tom

You do get scaled up to 80 - you just need to find a group that will accept you. And you won’t necessarily be a drag, but that’s the perception.

Fractals do get harder at higher levels - stats on all enemies increase (more damage, more health), and they use more skills (eg/ the harpies in the asura pyramid fractal start doing knockdowns), and that’s on top of the agony mechanic starting at 10 (though it’s not a huge problem that requires agony resistance from Ascended gear until you reach the late teen levels). So that’s the “reasoning” behind the perception.

I’ve mostly stuck with low level fractals, and at least as of 3-4 weeks ago, I never had a hard time finding someone to fill out our group using gw2lfg.com (and even sometimes map chat).

As for the other thing, while you do get upscaled to 80, my experience is that there’s a fairly significant different between a level 80 (with level 80 gear) and a level 40 upscaled to 80. Most people don’t really put that much effort in to gearing while leveling and I believe that any gear that you have that isn’t the same level as you gets upscaled as much. So in simpler terms:

Level 80 in level 80 gear > Level 40 in all Level 40 gear > Level 40 in mixed level gear

Best deal on GW2 I’ve seen yet. $33.49 over on Amazon, straight up sale with no codes.

Ok, that price is close enough for me :-)

For those of you that have played Borderlands 2 and Guild Wars 2, which is a better solo game? Both are on sale on Amazon. Thanks!

What are you looking for in a solo game? BL2 has vastly better writing, and a fairly strong element of forward progression, which makes it fit my particular tastes better for that purpose, but GW2 has other charms.

I can like an RPG - type game for a variety of reasons. Tactical combat that isn’t just a click fest, an engaging story, good FPS-type combat. I don’t like action RPGs that are like Diablo / Torchlight / Titan’s Quest very much. I’m not so much of a loot chaser, although getting cool equipment that changes up gameplay or grants a new ability is good. I enjoyed games like The Witcher 1/2, Bioware RPGs, Dragon Age Origins. I would like Skyrim a lot if the combat was better, but I can’t seem to make it past level 20 before I get bored and quit.
