Yeah, it’s a balancing act, because like robc04, I tend to re-enter games by rolling a new character until I get my feet wet; then I go back to my existing characters. But the mechanic in GW2, that has you constantly using sub-optimal weapons and often sub-optimal skills simply to unlock them all makes low level play a bit tiring sometimes.

They’ve made so many changes though that I am having a tough time getting the feel for my characters, even though the highest is like 41.

The nice thing about the level 20 boosts is that it almost eliminates the “killz for skillz” mechanic. The unlock rate depends on your level, so if you have unlocked weapon skills at level 20 then you will basically unlock one skill with every kill.

I used one on my brand-new elementalist and within a few minutes every weapon skill in every attunement was unlocked. Priceless.

It takes almost no time to open up the “skillz” at any level. As Magnet says, it’s even less of an issue at level 20. I would recommend leveling your first character, though, and then see how you feel. The beginning of the game is not as interesting, so don’t get down on it if it’s a little boring to you at first.
I’m sure I’m going to get back into it at some point. Have they addressed the PvE high end issue where 3 classes clearly outperform the rest (Warrior, Mesmer and Guardian)? It bummed me out when I leveled and geared my necro only to find that he was severely gimped in the high end progression.

GW2 lost me when they made the recent changes to the trait system. Most of my characters are level 50-60 so it meant that all of them suddenly became completely gimped (because they moved all the trait unlocks to higher levels).
Returning to a game where you suddenly feel less powerful and weak is a real enthusiasm killer. The idea is to progress not regress. It’s a shame, I was enjoying it until that point.

Very clever way to get people to sign in. I know I’m guilty of playing GW2 with very (very) wide gaps. And I know missing a section of story because I can’t/forget to login is going to drive me berserk. Uggghhh.

EDIT: Okay okay - I always equate the word ‘buying’ with $$$. Since missed sections can still be obtained via in-game currency as well (of course it can), it is an annoyance but nothing more.

20g basically.

Well, I logged into my GW2 account recently, but not to take advantage of any content. Rather, I received several messages informing me that nefarious someones in Asia were attempting to both access my account and change may password. The thing is, they can’t get far enough to generate those messages without having somehow cracked both my username and password. Only the fact that my account is setup to authenticate login attempts and password change attempts through my personal email saved the account from being hacked. After a legitimate password change on my part, all activity not from me seems to have ceased. I think they were targeting dormant accounts.

The questions remains though, HOW did these folks get my username and password for GW2? It’s not completely unique, but it is a name/pw combo I only used in a couple of other fairly secure places (and I’ve changed it in those places as well now), which leads me to believe it could have been a breech at NCSoft. I can rule out malware or anything on my end, as I hadn’t logged into anywhere that used that specific combo in months (and I run multiple layers of security on my PC). Not cool to think hackers have login info for dormant GW2 accounts out there someplace.

I suspect they’ll get more players coming back if people are at least logging in every few weeks. If they say, “No, it’s fine, the content will be waiting for you whenever you log in,” I’d bet that 90% of people would ignore the new content completely. You need a little incentive for people to at least log in. According to the devs, it literally takes two seconds.

I think it’s a good compromise: It gets people thinking about the content, but they don’t have to pay any money unless they completely avoid logging in every few weeks. And even then, it seems like the fee is nominal.

Wish I had your rig (or the devs) because it takes a good 30 seconds to a minute on mine just to load up the first zone after I select a character on login. In all seriousness, though, I agree that this isn’t too bad. Better than Marvel Heroes, with their “special gifts” that require you to log in every day during events.

I’ve been gone a good long while, just re-downloaded the client and jumped back in the last week or so. The world seems more populated than I remember it, perhaps due to the megaserver thing. Pretty rare now that I end up trying to do an event on my own, which used to be a fairly common occurrence. Started a new character and played him until I remembered how the game works, then went back to my first guy, a necromancer who is in the upper 70s now. Having fun exploring zones that I never got around to when I was playing before.

Agreed. It allows them to have the two-week Living World schedule, gives people an incentive to log in and fool around for at least a few minutes, and gives even the most casual players a way to catch up by buying the story chapters.

I’m not sure, but you may not need to log on with a character at all. I know that when you unlock the content, it’s unlocked for all your characters at once. I could be completely wrong though.

I’ve never seen 20 gold all together so I’m not willing to call that a nominal fee. I guess if you’re playing regularly with a bunch of 80s it’d be no big deal, but if you’re doing that then I don’t see you needing to buy up back content unless you went on vacation or something.

Have two 80s (ranger and elemental), have 0 desire to go back.

…and, they’re back.

Less than 48 removed from changing my password for GW2 to something unique I am once again receiving notifications that someone(s) from foriegn IP addresses are attempting to login to my account. I now can’t decide if these emails (which look legit) are actually phishing attempts, or if someone really does have my GW2 username and password again, so soon afte rI changed it (and did not login with it since changing it). I am absolutely positive it’s not an issue with my PC as I run multiple layers of security and have done multiple scans since having the issue the first time.

So, either it’s very official looking phishing emails or GW2 has a serious security issue.

Or maybe you do? I’m not trying to be combative, but are you sure your security steps are working?

I’ve never had this issue you’re describing.

Edit: Other than that, maybe it’s just phishing.

I got an email yesterday about an unauthorized access attempt from China as well. I only recently logged back in after a long hiatus. I’ve changed my password and so far nothing negative, it doesn’t look to me like they actually got into my account.

It’s possible, yes. Despite my multiple layers of security it could be possible that there is something on my system that could snoop out usernames and passwords, but here’s why I doubt that’s the case : I have zero other issues with this. I do a heck of a lot of stuff on this system, from personal finance to Ebay to online gaming. I would think that if I had a keylogger or trojan that was capturing text and sending to nefarious folks, they would have used something other than just my Guild Wars 2 login information by now.

The more I think about it, the more I suspect a phishing scam. I guess to test that theory I could login to my account from a totally separate PC in a different location, login to my email form that PC as well and authorize the login, then change my password. If I get yet another email about account access after that, I will know they are bullshit because what are the odds that two different PCs in two different locations could be compromised and capturing my GW2 login info?

Or… Go ahead and click on the link in the email and tell us what happens.

FYI, this is a valid authorization email (used a VPN)

fdsaion - the emails I receive look exactly like that. I need to take a good look at the header info and see if they take the same route as what you posted.
