I don’t think I’ve ever had to “grind” anything in GW2 yet.
That said, I get what stusser’s saying. The personal story stuff was constantly pinging on the map until you finished it, and yes, sometimes it was out of reach for your level. I always felt like saying “Shut up about my meeting in the woods! I’m only level 20. I’ll come back later!”
I guess I never noticed. I barely did any of the personal story stuff until I was at level cap with all exotics. I’ve never cared all much for too much story in MMOs anyway.

I don’t see why that’s a problem, but I guess that’s just a matter of perception. I understood the personal story to be episodic content available every few levels throughout my journey through the game, I never expected to go from chapter to chapter to chapter with nothing in between. This is a MMO, not story-driven single player RPG.

Yet the feedback from new players on the changes already is that they hate them. There may have been a perceived issue but they’ve completely fucked up the implementation just like the last feature patch and the changes to the trait system and the megaserver. As for levelling not being smooth really it was quite easy to figure out that you had to to the hearts and events (side quests) to get to a level ready for the next chapter, not to mention that combat and abilities were intuitive before and easy to figure out.
*feedback from new players on the forums and reddit. There are some self-selection issues there.
Everything you said there is wrong.

I figured that out just fine, but often there was nowhere clear to go. You had to go to other races’ areas and clear them out too. It just didn’t flow well; there were no breadcrumb quests pointing you there, and besides, you were abandoning your racial areas and storyline for another one in the middle of the chapter.

I get what you’re saying, and knowing “where to go next” was certainly a problem, too – just not a huge one to my mind, as it encouraged exploration, and I’m comfortable putting out a modicum of effort outside the game to understand how to approach things. The only thing I really disagree with in your post is the “grinding monsters” comment, really.
The personal story was always best forgotten, to my mind, (not to revisit old arguments in this thread). It was so poorly done and served merely as a distraction from what I see as the core of the game.
The leveling curve was right on, if you were doing everything: gathering, crafting, hitting vistas and jumping puzzles, and killing stuff on the way to other stuff. If you weren’t feeling the whole do-it-all experience (or if you didn’t realize it was there), you fell behind, and it’s good that they fixed that.
Season 2 starts back up on November 2nd with Echoes of the Past
The attack on the Pale Tree has spurred the world’s leaders into action and hardened their resolve. As season 2 continues, the races of Tyria are preparing for war against the Elder Dragon Mordremoth.

Remember to login today (or any time in the next 2 weeks) to permanently unlock S02E06, the latest “2 week” living world update since mid-August.
Thanks Stusser, I appreciate the reminders. I don’t know when or if I’ll get back into GW2, but it’s nice to be able to pop in and get permanent access to the content.
I just started GW2 last week and must say if the guiding that is there right now wasn’t before it must have been a really confusing game at release. Granted, parts of the Handholding is a bit much, but still better then no guidance. I thoroughly enjoy it.

What are the aspects you would have found confusing, do you think?
Mostly the navigation and where to go, and all the various things you can do and explore. It acts like a tiered tutorial and eases you in instead of dumping it on you. While it may suck if you need to redo some of the basic stuff with each new character, as a beginner I am not overwhelmed with new mechanics and can simply play and enjoy the game instead of trying to figure out all at once.

Ugh, enough with the living story crap already.
Give us a real expansion :P
I’ve recently re-subbed back to WoW and the difference between their content patches/expansion are night and day with GW2.
Whatever else you can say about Blizzard they certainly know how to add meaningful, enjoyable content and upgrades to their games.

A thousand times this. I put in a good couple hundred hours into GW2 when it came out, then I shelved it until an expansion came out that included new content, features, mechanics, etc. I’m still waiting.

Sure, but WoW sat for over a year with no updates whatsoever.
