Double XP this weekend too, fellas.

Oh snap… and it’s going snow this weekend.

GAME ON!

Oooo, nice, I can finally get my Mesmer to cap maybe.

Yeah, I might use the chance to level up my thief or my warrior. They’re the only classes I haven’t got to 80 yet.

Definitely worth that price. I’ve moved on to FF14 but got way more than my money’s worth and I paid whatever a digital deluxe preorder was going for. To any new players who come across this thread, the personal story is a bit weak imo. The best parts of this game happen when you get out there and explore the world at your own pace and ignore the direction the personal story tries to lead you in.

The personal story is pretty weak and I missed season one of the Living World (which is unfortunately not replayable at this point) but I’m just about caught up on season two and I think the storytelling has greatly improved. In addition to that the second season introduced two new level 80 zones to the game that are among the best it has to offer. Can’t wait to see what they announce on Saturday if this is the direction they are moving in.

It will be a mobile CCG like Hearthstone!

You heard it here first!

I’m hoping they go for a full $50 paid expansion with an entire new land mass and 20 more levels, with monthly living world updates starting 1 month in.

This is about the only thing that would get me back to playing GW2 at this point.

I love how distinct the classes are in Guild Wars 2. Given how well they handled that, I’d love to see another class. Or two!

Whatever they’re announcing, I’m excited to find out what it is. Oh, also they should totally give us playable quaggins.

Completely agree, their classes were fantastic. I was hoping that the existing classes would continue to receive a bunch of new abilities or even new weapons as time went on, but ArenaNet went the Living Story route instead, so I checked out. If the expansion can add new mechanics either in the form of new classes, more abilities for existing classes, weapon sets, etc I’m interested. If they can add in new things for a player to do at max level, doubly so!

When you say “do more things as max level”, do you mean some sort of endgame grind*? I’ve got a couple of characters at level 80, and I still enjoy playing them to try to get all their skills, explore more of the world, gear up better, and so forth. I guess the usual MMO endgame. Not to mention exploring the world, getting achievements, and ranking up PvP or WvW. And that’s without ever having gotten very far with fractals. Do you feel Guild Wars 2 stops for you at level 80?

-Tom

  • not meant in a pejorative sense

I don’t know if I would buy an expansion with more levels. I love MMO endgames and hate the leveling process. Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 are my favorite MMOs because they make the leveling fly by without much hassle. Having to go through that, plus acquiring all-new endgame gear at no doubt great investment of time and gold, would be extremely annoying.

I wouldn’t say that GW2 stops for me at 80, but it stops offering a hook that gets me interested long-term. I’m an explorer in these RPGs, but not really in terms of game environments. I’m an explorer of mechanics, so I can still play a while past 80 as I experiment with different builds, acquire different gear to make each build work, but once I’ve exhausted build ideas I pretty much move on. Because ArenaNet hasn’t added much in the way of new mechanics (such as a new weapon set for each class, a new customization system, etc) I haven’t been drawn back into the game. Story is probably what I’m least interested in, especially in a MMO, so the Living World stuff hasn’t done anything for me.

Anyway, when I said “more things to do”, I wasn’t referring to a gear grind or anything. It’s mostly that the current content in GW2 doesn’t appeal too much to me. I was most looking forward to WvW but I didn’t like their implementation very much. “Battleground” style PVP lacks continuity and I can’t really get mentally engaged, and as I said the Living World / story elements just don’t do anything for me. That leaves me with very little to do, even if the urge to load up the game strikes me.

So, by more things to do, I guess a decent example (at least conceptually) I can point to is something like the Garrison in the latest WoW expansion. I’m not the biggest fan of their implementation in some cases, but I really like the idea. I like having a piece of turf that’s my own, building up a fortification, finding and attracting followers to populate it, constructing buildings on limited plots each which are providing bonuses, sending followers out on missions. I think it’s neat, it’s something that you can focus working on or pick at it here and there on the side while you’re raiding or doing PVP or whatever. The tricky part is making sure it ties into the rest of the game. I’m not really a big fan of “housing” that is just decorating a personal space that has little to no utility.

Another example of “things to do at max level” would be (again, conceptually) the territory control and that EVE online has. I really like how economics ties everything in the game together. Losing a ship costs a lot of money, so money becomes important. Controlling territory can give you access to making a lot of money by setting up industry but as people want to take your lunch money, it leads to PVP, which circles back to economy as yet more ships get blown up. I’m not a big fan of EVE, but this sort of thing is definitely something that falls under “things to do at max level” for me.

Ultimately, I’m just not interested in MMO story, I can’t get into WvW or sPVP, and I’ve never been an achievement whore (not a pejorative!) . So if they can add something new for me to do, it just might provide the hook to keep me playing the game. If it’s “just” a new class and some new abilities for the existing classes that gives me a little to explore, but I probably won’t stay for long.

I’m looking forward to finally grabbing this. MMOs are time-sinks for me, and time is at a premium so when I grab them I only do so when they’re on sale and have been thoroughly “baked” with patches and community feedback (currently also waiting for a good deal on The Secret World).

Sounds to me like you need to get to work on a legendary weapon. Slacker.

-Tom

I shall look into those, Sir Tom!

I stopped playing GW2 because there’s so much to do that I felt like I wasn’t getting anywhere. Yeah, I know, that sounds backwards. I felt like I’d never make it to the promised land of crafting a legendary weapon, or full map completion, or raising that vine plant thing, etc. I thought, “I can spend huge time chasing that stuff…or there’s this giant backlog full of interesting games over here…” and that was pretty much it for me.

I keep getting started on getting one of these and then realizing how serious the grind is. It’s truly ridiculous. Just getting a precursor is a yearlong effort.

MY guess on the announcement…Season 3.

Yeah legendaries take grinding to ridiculous levels. It was after taking a serious look at trying for once that I decided to quit. Just not worth the grind for a minor stat bump and pretty uninspiring looks.
