I give up. I have to see it. I do like the idea of not trying all the builds and saving some for the actual release.

If you want to just try it without paying a dime, pre-order it on Amazon. All pre-orders from Amazon are now essentially pre-purchases and get guaranteed access to ALL beta weekend events plus a 3 day headstart if you decide to stick around.

But I think you’ll love it once you play it. :)

Am I the only one without beta access to this?!!

Yup, got it from Amazon. And I wasn’t even expecting it.

…and Anet just answered the whole drama going on with Amazon:

We’re still working with Amazon to figure out what they’ll be able to do, so I don’t have a final answer for you.
But the basics are this. We have limited server space, so while we guarantee beta access for people who have committed to purchasing the game, we don’t guarantee it for everyone who just walks into a store and says, “yeah, reserve me a copy”.
Some online stores, not just Amazon, are not able to actually bill the credit card until shipment. But the customer has still made his intent to purchase very clear. It’s more like purchasing but being able to get a refund later, which we’re fine with, than it is like just adding a name to a reservation list and then having to come back and purchase later.
Because we know Amazon is important to a lot of customers, we want to find a way for Amazon to be part of the prepurchase program. It would be unfair to exclude them for being up-front about a policy that’s actually already being used behind-the-scenes elsewhere.

And of course some people are still throwing a hissy fit and threatening to get refunds.

Sorry, just had to post this as I got quite a laugh from it:

I won’t be putting a dime in their cash shop. I’ll be waiting on any expansions too. No pre-purchasing for me. Not after being screwed like this.

I’m also going to tell every single person I know that is remotely interested about how much they f***** me.

I haver the original guild wars and don’t care about the the beta, but I do want to make sure I get the items in my Hall of Fame or whatever it was called (statues etc). What version can I pre-order to make sure I get that?

So again, they are mad because a few extra people got in to the beta so they are NOT buying the game because of this? That doesn’t even make sense for the internet.

Well to be mad they’d have to have already bought the game, because they pre-purchased it. Seems a bit late to chargeback the purchase (I’m not sure what they’d give as the reason to their CC company, but I’m sure it’d be hilarious).

It has nothing to do with the pre-order. You need to just make sure the two accounts are the same and that you dedicate stuff to the Hall of Monuments in GW1’s Eye of the North. Be prepared for a lot of effort if you’ve not played a ton of GW1.

Boy, that guy sure was screwed. He paid $60 for a game and some pre-release events, he gets the game and some pre-release events. God, how could they.

It’s like his parents told him they were buying him a pony, and then they did, and then they bought ponies for all his friends too. And then he beat his pony to death with his outrage.

If like me you have only been playing GW1 for a couple of months you can still complete Hall Of Monuments achievements that will count even after GW2 is released. Although I suspect I will have a hard time tearing myself away from GW2 once it has progressed to full release. ;)

Here’s another classic:

In other words money talks. Amazon gets exclusive benefits because they’re so big.

There’s no real sense behind it other than that. Oh well. I will be sure to boycott Amazon from now on because that’s complete bullcrap.

The Amazon boycott is underway! :D

Yep, exclusive benefits that…everyone else gets?

Also, as far as I can tell there’s only a couple places you can get the Deluxe Edition content (Amazon not among them), but that doesn’t piss them off?

They don’t like the fact that they had to pay upfront to get those “exclusive benefits” whereas pre-orders now do not. That’s about the gist of it.

I wouldn’t -like- it, either, but they’re still getting everything they were getting before (except if they throw a hissyfit and demand a refund), and if they didn’t want to spend $60 on the game they never should have done so in the first place.

I was lucky and had a ton of pets from having characters at release, but I hadn’t completed a single campaign. I’ve had fun going back and doing the original campaign, most of Eye of the North, etc. The hero teams make for an interesting diversion.

Sorry if I’m being dense, but am I understanding correctly that if I pre-order GW2 from Amazon today, I get all the benefits (BWE access, 3 day headstart, hero band) as someone who pre-purchases through ArenaNet?

Yes.1
