I wanted to clear this up, you won’t actually have to pay for the stuff we were talking about in that video. Of course you could argue that buying things in the gemstore is in effect paying for it but you absolutely don’t have to do it. The game will also eventually have larger paid expansions (as I think just about every MMO does) but there is going to be a lot of free content added to the game post launch.

Awesome! I have no problem paying for content, but if you guys feel the revenue for non-content cosmetic stuff in the gem store is sufficient to pay for new content, that’s even better.

That’s the hope at least :) All signs seem positive so far. Making people pay for small chunks of content tends to be a pretty bad thing for your game in the long term in any case because it creates barriers to people playing with each other which ultimately fractures your player base.

Didn’t Guild Wars 1 have small chunks of content for sale? I guess that was a different type of game, though.

There were some bonus ‘single-person’ missions, i think.

The only content outside the campaigns that you could buy for GW was the bonus mission pack. Actually, this pack was originally a free extra only available from a promotion, but was later made available to buy. There was not a risk of the BMP fracturing the player base because the missions were single player.

In GW you could also buy a bunch of different things including access to skills that would normally have to be unlocked. You would still have to buy the unlocked skills in the game with gold, but you wouldn’t have to unlock them through quests or progression.

Better launch that .exe since it grows a LOT before you can click the ‘play’ button, unless they fixed something and how has more “streaming”, like the original GW client if I remember correctly.

World transfer will be free and unlimited from Noon July 20 to 6:00 PM Pacific on July 21. After this period, you’ll need to spend gems for a transfer. Transfers will still be unlimited. The gem costs for a world transfer after 6:00 PM Pacific on July 21:

So they’re using the pricing in the store to encourage migration of players to lower population servers, which isn’t a bad idea. This also means that they have a way to differentiate the type of transfer you can get, which has the potential to allow them to give free transfers to low pop servers in a fairly straightforward fashion without having to force people onto specific servers.

I’m confused, why would people pay money (after july 21) to transfer a beta character that will be deleted on release?
