HBO to Tackle A Song of Ice and Fire!

Holy shit.

I’d get HBO for it.

I’d hit it.

Sweet, brother/sister fucking on tv.

(Can you tell I just started reading the series, and so far aren’t exactly enamored with it?)

There’s brother/sister fucking in Rome, too, so that’s not that unusual for them.

Keep going. There’s very real payoffs throughout.

Here’s another link with news of this event (most of which it cribbed from the Variety article) just for fluff:

This may be the greatest news I’ve ever heard.

Ever.

I it were carved in stone that the whole epic would make TV, I might be excited. But given that Deadwood died soon, and Carnivale died soon (and that HAD a planned out arc with known ending, right?), and Rome is going to be cut short I have no illusions about this getting a full run.

Winter is coming… to HBO!

Yeah. This is very cool.
Can’t wait to see who they cast in this.

Dunno, but if HBO waves a nice check in front of him, he’ll quit lollygagging about and get down to some writing.

Oh, and thank god HBO didn’t opt for Wheel of Time!

Now we need someone to do this for Malazan Book of the Fallen as well.

Now that would be awesome.

The Wire was close to being canceled every year, and one of the reasons why it slid by is that filming in Baltimore is cheap. Combine that with their unorthodox casting, sometimes even hiring people right off the street, and the show didn’t do too horribly on a dollar per viewer basis.

My first thought was that this was a bad idea…but you guys are all so excited, ok fine, I AM TOO!

I really like those books, but for the first 2 seasons you’d still have almost everyone saying: “WTF is going on?”

Good luck with that. That series would be even MORE difficult to film.

I’m really looking forward to the reactions of people who have never read the series to certain key events. You know the ones. The ones that made your eyes bug out when you read them. No spoilers here, but hooo-eee. This is going to make the shocks of the typical HBO series seem like Saturday morning cartoon surprises.

Good point is that HBO just picked up the rights and they’ve begun development. This is a long way from being a done deal, but it sounds like the participants are all gunning for doing it.

Ice and Fire is way more filmable than the Malazan BotF. Not least because it has actual characters, but mainly because it’s not dependent on 10,000 years of imaginary history. I like Erikson, and seeing army-destroying waves of green fire would be cool (and stuff), but it’s not a great candidate for filming.
