Can someone help me? I think there is something seriously wrong. I think I have lost the will to game!!!
UT20003 feels wrong. I know it is a demo. I know it's the same game, but is it? It feels like quake and I hate Quake. I always liked the slower pace of UT. That's what made it (for me anyway) more strategic. You weren't just pounding down on the fire button hoping you got a few kills in before someone did you in.
I know what you're thinking. Wolf, stop griping and go buy Bf1942. Well I did, and it is fun, but I can see it getting old very quickly. I capture one point just have you take another. Even with 35 vehicles, the game quickly degenerates into; my gun is bigger and better than yours.
Well, if computer games have gotten boring, I always have my Gamecube and Mario64...err.... I mean Mario Sunshine. I will say it is pretty, but innovative? When I finish a board in sunshine, all I can think is, "thank god that is over." Then I have to go back in and do it all again. If you played Mario 64 than you will be able to quickly discover most of sunshine’s secrets. I don't know why Nintendo felt Luigi and Mario needed to have special backpacks in their games, but I hope the next versions will see them removed.
I realize I am not the first person to feel this way. I know that being cynical. I know that there will always be that one game that comes out and changes my mind, but I hope it gets here soon.
ShieldWolf: Sounds to me like you WANT a break from gaming. The minute you start deconstructing games to their basic parts leaving them completely vulnerable to classic criticisms = time to go.
Mario is just jumping.
BF1942 is just shooting.
UT2k just feels ‘wrong’.
Not to say your opinion isn’t valid, but I am sure you can see the pattern too. Go read some books for a while.
Well, you’re certainly not alone in feeling this way. I’ve lost a lot of interest since E3 or so. Sure, there are games i’m looking forward to play, and i’ve even played through one or two since E3, but i havn’t been jazzed for a while now.
I do have a suggestion though. Why not try out some lesser known titles? In fact, do what I did and get some games from indie developers. Here are links to a few really good ones:
I share your reservations about Quake 3 2003. Aka Unreal Tournament 2003. You guys can use my clever little Quake 3 2003 reference if you want, but be sure to credit me.
However, I think your reservations about Battlefield 1942 are just crazy talk. I’m loving how the different maps play differently and none of them have gotten old for me yet. It’s even been nice to revisit Wake a few times. Now if I can just get in line quickly enough to get the goddamn submarine in Midway. It’s frustrating to spawn on the deck of the sub just as some schmuck with a faster load time is submerging it. Whee, floating in the Pacific. Again.
Mr. Micek’s suggestion to expand your genre horizons is solid advice, although I haven’t heard of half the things he mentioned. Hateful Chris? Cramgene? Huh?
Maybe it’s time to move to turn-based strategy? Hard core flight sims? Adventure games? Japanese dating sims?
Bah. There are tons of great games already out and we haven’t even seen the new wave of deep designs that will be coming out in the wake of Morrowind, GTA3 and Republic. Of course, Nintendo console fare and FPSes never floated my boat so some things are relative I guess but, hey, being the nutcase who always wanted more aesthetic, dynamic and systemic designs is finally not an excercise in futility. There’s product out there and on the way I’m genuinely excited about.
Which kinda sucks because I really need brainless filler out there to bitch about. Wait, plenty of that there too still. Life is so sweet.
I’ll share what has got me excited about games again:
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
This is the first game I have put a deposit down for in my life, because I so need to have it the minute it is out.
I think GTA3 is the Wolfenstein [Edit: I take that back. GTA and GTA2 were the Wolfenstein, and GTA3 is the Doom] of 3d immersive crime simulators, sort of the first of the new breed, and I’m excited to see where this genre goes. Hopefully the richness of the environments will keep GTA9: Geritol City from falling into too much of a rut.
