I really like Discourse; it’s made reading and writing easier here, on a few other forums that have adopted it, and on a bunch of small forums that wouldn’t have started otherwise. That last bit is really important because ease for both administrators and users is the only way for independent communities to survive Facebook et al.
You can always just start a private subreddit, that’s what most people do. But you give up a lot of control and of course while Reddit is no Facebook, it is a largely faceless corporation.
True, but yes, I lump in reddit with the bad guys. It feels a lot more independent than it is (but I spend my share of time there.)

I don’t see why. Reddit hasn’t had any privacy scandals that I know about.
Does anybody know why there’s a small envelope icon next to the replied-to button on this post? I haven’t seen the envelope icon in any other posts on the forum and it’s made me curious. I can’t interact with it either, so it’s a mystery to me.
Link to post:
If you hover over the icon, it says what it means.
Specifically, that it was posted via email.
I can’t hover on my tablet, but that’s good to know. Thanks.

Ever since the last update I’m having the same problem that was fixed earlier. When I click on an external link and try to go back I get Corrupted Content Error.
I’ve also had Chrome issues since the last update. Threads that I am tracking are not getting properly “read” so they keep showing up as unread. It looks like that if I disable the Privacy Badger addon it works correctly however.
Tried this on both Windows 10 and Linux on the same laptop with the same result.
Sorry if this has been mentioned before - is there a way to mute a topic for a period of time? I tend to (for example) binge watch TV shows when they are done airing - for example legion - and will read the thread after I greadily consume the entire damn last season over a few days.
I know if you mute a person, you have the option to do so for a set period of time, so I’m hoping we have the technology.
If there is, it certainly isn’t obvious. Muting people working that way is only because of wumpus’ bizarre and arrogant notions about what people should be using mute for.
But in this case, I guess maybe just untrack/mute the thread in question and then when you’re done with the show (or whatever) search it up and retrack it?
No snooze button yet. I’m hoping it becomes a thing now that Facebook added it and I assume other social media platforms will see the value in it.

If you want the feature, suggest it on their meta forums. You can never tell, maybe they will think it’s a worthwhile addition.

And if they don’t, they usually say why.
Not sure if this is the most appropriate place to post this, but here goes. Last weekend, this forum (and only here) has started logging me out every time I leave the site or I close Firefox (68.0.1), forcing me to log back in when I return. I don’t clear cookies or site data on browser exit, but I did try this as an attempt to fix the problem (didn’t have an effect). I implemented 2fA here to see if that’d make a difference (nope) and there’s nothing being blocked that I can see (Qt3 is whitelisted; I believe Google Analytics is the only script not running, but it’s been that way for years). I would have thought it to be a Fx problem but I noticed Chrome is doing the same thing now.
Usually, this sort of issue is transient or easily corrected but this one has me stumped. Was there anything on the forum end that changed in the last week? Each day I try a different combo of settings to attempt to fix it with no success.

How do I get Discourse to let me comment on Front Page posts? It just says “loading discussion” forever and never lets me start a thread.
That’s from clicking on the Comments button on the front page.
It is driving me crazy not being able to tell people they’re wrong!

Its because Discourse has suddenly stopped automatically creating topics for front page posts. The reasons are unknown at the moment.

Except none of the recent podcasts show up at all.
