Still too early for a Post-Mortem, but thinking about how the faction powers worked out this game:

  • UN’s income from claims and factories is insanely useful in a 5 player game… might not be as powerful in a 3 player. Cycler is a great bonus.
  • NASA’s launch bonus doesn’t provide as much total, but it’s all front-loaded to the early game where it’s the most useful.
  • ESAs thrust boost isn’t that hot now that solar sails got nerfed. I hope they do something more in 3E
  • Shimizu’s power is still useful, but I think Nikolaj didn’t have enough cash early on to make as much use of it to be a free-market machine. I think the idea is to grab desirable patents for cheap and hold them ransom. Have to watch out for Anti-Trust though (I could’ve hit him several times, but I needed my ops for other things).
  • PRCs faction power is a controversial as it ever has been. I didn’t know about water theft as a free action though… very situational. Best Bernal power though IMHO.

I pretty much agree with that. I think Shimizu is probably much more powerful with fewer players where he’s more likely to get unopposed research ops. In this game there was always somebody who could bid against me, so I mostly ended up paying about the same as everybody else. It is nice to always be able to bid, though, and the deal I just made with Juan wasn’t bad either.

Regarding ESA, I think (but can’t quite remember) that push factories are more useful in 3rd ed., so that’s a nice bernal privilege. Also, solar beams have been reworked, iirc, so I think they’ll be a strong faction.

In fact, all of PRC’s faction powers are free actions. Also the fact they can use others’ labs is a potentially huuuuge bonus. But you kind of need to be ruthless - both in actively looking for opportunities to exploit and to in turn execute. Kind of goes against my nature! :) But damn does the lack of ‘free’ early game income keep you skint in the early game.

Pretty much agree. the reason I don’t have an Ersatz Bernal is that I didn’t think it would pay off, and even if it did the 10WT expanse would have set me back a couple of turns. Although the PRC felonies (claim jumping and water theft specially) being free actions makes them more useful than I though.

Also starting in power I think is pretty nice UN advantage as well. It takes two successful bids to completely wrest power… and that assumes the UN player lets themselves have too little money during the blue phase.
