HoMM V Open Beta for Fileplanet subscribers

Teehee.

UBI has put off this open Beta a couple of times and then announced today as the day. Turns out, you have to be a Fileplanet subscriber. Or wait 3 long days to download it. Oh the hand wringing on the official forums. I am amazed everytime there is a virtual eruption when a company “tricks” a game’s fans with “lies and marketing gimmicks” and how quickly those same fans “lose all interest” in said game. I mean every single time. Crazy gamers.

Now how much is one of those subscriptions?

Man, you think that’s bad. Just wait til the Starforce people show up.

Hmmm I’m a file planet subscriber, had the first and longest running Heroes of Might & Magic V page on the net and I don’t think I’ll bother. Odd

Booo.

Wanna explain why you don’t think you’ll bother?

Downloading it now…

Well I just found out the coolest thing.

In the past few days I’ve been wanting to buy a founders club membership, I wanted the no waiting downloads and the hit points and stuff.

I went right to the sign up page so that I could download this beta, apparently my comcast 8MB line automatically entitles me to founders club membership!

I love cross marketing!

Well, I’m disappointed that it’s multiplayer only - you can’t even set up a locked game with AI players.

Out of 3 games I’ve tried to play, 2 of them resulted in everyone getting disconnected from the host at startup.

I’d suggest keeping the graphics quality at “Low” or thereabouts, as the whole thing is very unoptimized and choppy as hell at higher settings.

The default “one-minute turns” doesn’t give you enough time to do anything of note with both your town(s) and your heroes.

Oh, everyone else has to sit there twiddling their thumbs when it’s not set to simultaneous turns - you can’t even check out your towns or anything. Worse is when a player is in tactical combat, because the other players can’t even observe - they just sit there staring at the overland map they’ve revealed so far.

I’m surprised at how choppy the engine is so far, considering the overland map is almost exactly like the overland in Etherlords 2.

Because of the glacial pace of multiplayer and the slowness of the engine, coupled with the short turn timer by default, it’s very hard to get a grasp of the interface, unit types, and any other nuances of this version of the game. I really wish they had included some form of singleplayer in the beta so you could really explore this version at your leisure.

MP only?!?!? That sucks ass. Guess I will wait.

Yeah, they really mislabeled this, IMO - it should be called a Multiplayer Test instead of an Open Beta, because the game is primarily singleplayer and yet they don’t allow you to play it that way.

Mine too. If you figure out how to get the hit points and/or the free magazines as well holler please.

Not good news for multiplayer with more than two players. Two-player might be ok if they fix the crashing. Hope they have small maps so you can get a game in in an hour or so.

I guess I just have a problem with calling something an “open beta” when its through a closed environment.

I don’t think they can show up since their computers are hosed. :)

I was all set to check it out until I heard it was multiplayer only. Hopefully they’ll have a single player beta up soon.

I was going to at least check out the look in MP, but after downloading and registering it simply fails to see my mouse. I get a big hand pointer in the middle of the screen that won’t move. Very “beta” still I guess.

Awesome. Fileplanet seems not to have noticed that I stopped paying for their service over a year ago.

HoMM5 Here I come!

Yeah, there was nothing labelling this as multiplayer only until you actually install it, and notice the “single player” option grayed out.

Ugh. Is this supposed to make me want to buy the game?

-The most counterintuitive interface I have ever seen. “How the hell do I ready up?” “Hey how do I start the game? It’s greyed out.” “How do I ready?” “WTF HOW DO YOU READY THIS SHIT WTF”

-Turns take approximately 30-45 seconds just to send to other players, apparently.

-Everyone crashes/stalls out after 1-2 turns.

Why did they even bother to release this?

Yeah, it’s a mess. But there’s some great stuff hiding in there, I can see it. I hope they can beat the odds and pull this one out, or at least delay the release until all the serious kinks are smoothed out.
