Horror movie golden age?

Are horror movies in a golden age? Are scares being replaced by adult dread? Should I pay any attention to this article? Please tell me. Warning: mild Hereditary spoiler at beginning.

GQ sure agreed with the NYT thesis this past Autumn.

Oh we’re talking about Hereditary! I want to see that so bad. Is that out today?

I thought the '70s were the golden age of horror.

Pfff, nobody likes black and white movies.

Hm. It seems like there’s about the same number of good horror movies per year (3 or 4, more or less) as there always is.

There, are you happy now?

Hey, people ran out of the theater screaming when this was shown in 1895!

Horror movies have been in a golden age for awhile now. While there is a line of demarcation at Blair Witch (as @triggercut talked about in the October event on the front page a few years back; I am too lazy to dig up the link right now), I think the actual golden age probably started some time in the aughts. But when it hit we had been building towards it post Blair Witch, no question.

The vast majority of this millennium has been very different from the 90s, in terms of horror.

Yep, we’ve discussed this before – on the front page even – as peacedog mentions. :)
