This popped up in conversation this weekend. You know the bit I’m talking about, the semi-short “ooh-ooh”‘s that show up about halfway through The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy For The Devil”? Sure you do.
I know there are a bunch of songs that have used it, ironically or otherwise, but the only one I can think of right now is The Farm’s hit from the baggy/Madchester era, “Groovy Train”. But I know there’s more. Help me, hivemind!
Hmm, tough one. There are songs that I think of as quoting the "woo woo"s, but they don’t really upon review. Primal Scream’s “Loaded” for instance. Or Spiritualized’s “Lay Back In The Sun”.
I’ll bet someone like Brian Jonestown Massacre or The Verve must have at least one.
charmtrap: I think “Loaded” counts. Primal Scream’s post-Screamadelica records definitely reference a Stonesy vibe, so I don’t think it’s too far a stretch. Spiritualized is more of an edge-case.
There’s a really obvious one I’m totally blanking on, though. Stupid brain.
A friend of mine came up with Ian Astbury’s “Back On Earth”. I don’t normally listen to Ian Astbury, but that’s a pretty cool little song. And I found World Party’s “Way Down Now”, which is a fucking awesome song as well as having a rousing SFTD woo-woo chorus.
Yo La Tengo’s “Paul Is Dead” has both the sung Woo Woo, and explicitly refers to the Woo Woos in the lyrics. It’s not an especially good song, but there you are.
Grinderman’s “Palaces of Montezuma” doesn’t directly quote SFTD, but it’s basically a cover in spirit, I think.
Yep, on “Take It From the Man!”, BJM do various “inspired by” originals that rip off and recombine various 60s songs, and they do the “hoo hoo” thing. Don’t remember what they call that song, though.
