Yeah, I guess I just cancel now, and re-“subscribe” for a month if they have something I want.
Heh heh I’m reading the same comment in a few sites, of people with the old classic plan who didn’t want the ‘special status’. I’m finally free! etc
I don’t mind continuing to Pause when it’s a month where the games are a dog’s dinner or when there’s literally one game that I’m interested at all in, but I’m a little concerned about this part:
When you join Humble Choice, you’ll save more on the Humble Store the longer you’re an active member, with discounts reaching up to 20% on eligible purchases. (Discount resets if you skip or cancel.)
The way I read it, it may be a disincentive to Pause because not only do you lose the discount for the month you’re pausing, but it resets at some minimum even if you buy the next month’s bundle. Of course, I write this not having read the FAQ yet.
The question is, is “pausing” even still going to be a thing? If there’s no classic to preserve, and if pausing doesn’t preserve the cumulative discount, then what’s it for?

Indeed, but that’s a very small incentive. I don’t care about the humble store discount.
I assume you can still pause if you don’t like the current month’s lineup, but it’s unclear why you wouldn’t just cancel.
Well, “skip” to me implies pausing, so I assume that’s still a thing, especially if it’s essentially just going back to “Humble Monthly” but with an arbitrary number of games.
BTW this was a month I bought in. Mafia and a few of the others looked interesting.
Yay! And I can finally pause on bad months now with the horrible deal I was on where I couldn’t pause without cancelling the $12 price.
If pausing still reliably produces that $4 discount, that would be a reason.

Ahh, there you go. Very possible. I’ll stay with the current strategy until we find out.
Good point, although they may be catching on to that one. BTW that one seems to have gotten more reliable over the last 6 months perhaps. Before that (OK, maybe it’s been a year) I kept hearing others talk about getting the “please don’t pause” bribe offer but I would never get it, despite pausing fairly often.
Yeah, seems like just the old Monthly again except you know what you’re getting and you get less store discount if you ever skip a month. Which as a classic subscriber means nothing has changed for the better but I will routinely have less discount. so, bonus?
The actual thing people have been complaining about is the game selection, and there’s no way to tell if that’s getting any better. (Though as I say, for me it’s been much more consistently worthwhile since the switch to Choice.)
Not clear yet if this is the case, but if the Humble Games Collection is Game Pass for all games published by Humble Games, then that’s a nice benefit, in addition to the monthly haul. They had a pretty darn good year last year:
The initially announced lineup is nothing like “every Humble published game”. Though it did have Unsighted, which RPS loved and is last year, I think.
This whole thing reads to me like : “We realized nobody was buying in at the $20 level, and the majority of our sales were to Classic $12 folks and people who bought $12-a-month for X month packages, so we just gave up and it’s $12 a month for everyone now! Hooray us!”
Which is fine. Even though I’ve skipped a bunch of months lately, I still firmly believe Humble Monthly is the best deal in gaming. There may not be enough games that interest me for me to pay $12 every month, but there are certainly games well worth $12 and then some in every Humble Monthly. Now everyone gets the same games, at the same price, and can choose to smash or pass. I like it.

The best deal in gaming is Game Pass, period. The Humble Bundle is a great deal if you actually want at least one game per month.
…and it’s not available for $5 elsewhere. ;-)

Generally, $12 is cheaper than the games cost elsewhere. And $8 certainly is, if they keep the $4 coupon after pausing the previous month.
Hm, the 20% discount is actually something I took into consideration when choosing to unpause. In the past I rarely unpaused, but lately I’ve only unpaused every couple of months. That’s pretty annoying if they degrade to this resetting discount. Oh well, the discount was very arbitrary in the first place. In the past, only certain games got the full 20% and others got down to none at all.
I’m currently on the annual sub plan which ends up being $11 per month, but sounds like maybe I should just switch to monthly so I can get that sweet $4 discount you guys get all the time.
Ugh. It takes 12 consecutive months to replenish the full 20% discount.
The 20% discount is nice on new titles and sale items.
Not sure if you were aware buy you can stack the shit out of Honey discounts with very little legwork.
Get a 2% cash back card like (Citi double cash). Use that to buy Humble Wallet money with the Honey browser extension that gives anywhere from 1-8% back and pay w/paypal, add less wallet money than what the game would cost. Buy the game you want with the 20% subscriber discount, plus the discounted humble wallet money, and make sure to charge at least $1 to a credit card via paypal, thus triggering the Honey browser extension that gives anywhere from 1-8% back AGAIN on the entire purchase ( includes the wallet money being used).
From my limited experience I’ve found you can get up to 35% off a pre-order.
