Humble Bundle key redemption is awesome again (mostly) but the games are kinda meh

It looks to be lots of cute games - they’d have an 18+ disclaimer on the bundle (and probably not have Steam keys) if any of those were porn.

I only haven’t bought the bundle because I’m broke as hell right now. It looks to be a very good collection of lesser-known visual novels, though!

Different strokes and all–I just got the email from Humble, took one look at the cover art and just recoiled. That stuff is NotForMe™.

I should probably play a well-known one first!

They cut the explicit sexual content on some of the games in order to get them on Steam and then they offer 18+ patches as paid DLC on their website which restores the content they cut out in the first place. I’ve heard Nekopara is their biggest success, but uh…check out the Steam reviews.

Others like Fault Milestone, World End Economica, and Root Double are ones I’ve heard are really good and don’t have sexual scenes.

Well, that answers that question!

Anonymous second steam account here I come.

Perversity is distinct from expressing sexuality. Of course, your daughter doesn’t need to see that, but I don’t think it deserves purging.

My daughter is 9 now, my boys are 7 and 3. Of course, not-a-one of them knows anything about this stuff yet, but they’ll deal with it themselves eventually. I’m not going to go be a celibate in the meantime. :)

Oh they’re teens? That’s gross then.

Besides I imagine they brood a lot and have a bad case of teen angst which I can’t stomach, I get enough of that from my 13yo daughter :)

None of these games have “teen” characters in any sense that involves getting it on with minors.

Well this whole discussion has taken a weird turn.

True. Self-censor to the rescue. Best not to detract from the thread.

I do agree with these principles.

I’m not sure I agree with these though. If Backlogs should be mined for great games too, then why is collecting digital games pointless? In other words, if I have a bunch of games in my backlog, and I find out later from people that there’s a diamond in there that I should mine.

I also don’t think you need to play games to finish. A stopping point? Yeah, but that can be pretty flexible, right?

I actually really like the idea of eliminating whole genres though. Tom gave me that idea on his games podcast a few years ago when he said he doesn’t play Sports games, and that saves him a lot of time. Surely that should be in your principles too, right? Ignore certain genres. I tried doing that with racing games, but it didn’t work out. They’re such huge time sinks but I love them so much.

Here’s some additional rules, potentially from me:

Find genres you can do without, and cut them out of your backlog. Be vicious.
The best games that you’ll fall in love with also usually have huge flaws, so don’t look for perfect games.
Given the above rule, look for games that might not have hivemind consensus but has a few passionate fans
Also look for shorter games.
Given the above, when a good game gets docked for being short, put your money where your mouth is and support the short game.

I guess I thought of writing off genres as more of a tactic to implement those values (like time is short) rather than a universal principle in itself. But some of my principles might cross that line so hey.

It’s fuzzy science here! I haven’t thought about it that far.

Question about pausing and unpausing the Humble Monthly for those with experience in the matter, since I just paused my subscription for a month:

I would have been billed on the 30th for the bundle being fully revealed early next month (the 5th, I’m guessing), aka the one containing Dark Souls II: Scholar blah blah blah. At what point can I “unpause” and be safe from getting charged for that bundle? After that full bundle is revealed, I presume, and the next month’s come-on game is made known? Just trying to game it so I have the 10% discount on the Humble Store as long as possible.

I usually wait until the day of the full bundle reveal (July 7th in the case of the Dark Souls monthly, they seem to like doing the release on the first Friday of the month). Just to be safe.

Also, if your intent is to get the 10% discount for as long as possible, note that I do not think it reapplies as soon as you unpause if you did NOT purchase the previous bundle. I think the 10% is only applied for the period after your most recent monthly bundle purchase. I’m not 100% on that though. On the other hand, if next month’s reveal is something you know you want, you can always pay the $12 at any time, receive access to the reveal, and then wallow in your 10% discount from that point forward.

I dunno… $12 a month for games that I probably would use that 10% off on anyway seems like it’s worth it to find out what’s in there each month?

Keep in mind if you do already own DSII, and still enjoy it, you can gift this one to someone else or install on a second account so you can play multiplayer online or locally on two PCs on your LAN at home like my kids do. That second person comes in handy for beating bosses or as a sparring partner for online mayhem. ;)

Yeah, I skipped Stellaris because I had no interest in it, but now wish I’d stayed in for Brigador…

I skipped this coming one because I have no interest in DS2…which pretty much guarantees there will be a secondary title that’s high on my wishlist, like Armello or Darkest Dungeon.

Yeah, I already have DS2, but decided to ride this month out because the revealed games have been really strong the last few months, and I’m hoping that having an older (presumably cheaper) headliner gives them more budget to fill out the rest of the bundle.
