I can't get airplay bto work - please help

I have ipad and tv. Everything is hooked u correctly, but this airplay thing makes no sense, no official app too download?mmsonimmwathcing some cartoons on adult swim and want to switch it to watching on the tv, but indont see how do do that. Help!

If you have an Apple TV hooked up (and on the same wifi), all that’s left is that the app you’re using needs to support Airplay – then you’ll see the little square airplay icon, like when streaming audio from iTunes. Anything recent should, but not everything has been updated to use it. I’ve been using it from the MLB app for a couple of years now.

Double-click the home button. This brings up the list of apps that are currently in memory, aka the multi-tasking menu.

Flick your finger left to right on the bar. This brings up some controls.

The airplay icon is the box-and-arrow icon, which is slightly to the right of center. Tapping it will give you the choice of “iPad” or “Apple TV” for display, assuming it’s detected.

Once you’ve selected AppleTV, this mirrors most stuff to the TV. If you’re, say, watching video via Safari, this is the only way to do it.

Some apps, such as Apple’s Music and Video apps, have their own Airplay icon. With the Video app, you must play the video, and tap the screen to bring up the transport and volume controls. There’s an AirPlay icon just to the right of the Fast Foward button.

Some apps don’t support AirPlay even if you start it from the control bar. HBO Go didn’t for the longest time, though they finally released an update that did.

you do have an apple tv, right?

I have found my AppleTV to be an unreliable airplay target. If it goes to sleep it usually will not be available as an airplay target until I pull the power to hard reboot it. Google has told me that I am not alone in this problem.

What does Bachman Turner Overdrive have to do with anything?

BTW XBMC now supports air play even if you don’t own Apple TV and it works great for me. It used to be limited to video files only (not music), not sure if they changed it as I haven’t checked for long time and don’t really need to stream music from iPad to TV.

I used to have issue, though I didn’t need to cold boot it, waking it with the iOS remote app was enough. The last AppleTV software update fixed the problem. I’ve got the 2nd generation hardware, I don’t know if it’s still an issue with version 1 hardware.

They’re in the frop bog, watching cartoons with JP.

Michael somehow I didn’t quite get your post until today. I had Roku hooked up with a wired connection before-hand so I naturally assumed best thing to do is to hardwire the Appletv box. But that won’t work need both to be wireless.

Also, trying to do technical stuff after taking Ambien to go to sleep is really, really hard.

Hey Jeff–what seems to be the problem?

I have a wired Apple TV2 box and it works fine if I send video to it. Does your Adult Swim app not have a specific AirPlay output option?

Did you try double-tapping the home button and swiping right (to go left) and trying to output it to AirPlay there?

Yeah, I’m having difficulty seeing why either one would need to be wireless if you have a ethernet connection available. My AppleTV has been wired from day 1.

My AppleTV2 is wired as well (as any device doing HD streaming should be) and Airplay works fine.

Adult Swim videos use quicktime to play (just in Safari, no app). It’s a little clunky because halfway through each episode (ex. Squidbillies), it’s supposed to play a short ad, but half the time it doesn’t autoplay. So I have to hit play to continue the ad, then hit play again to watch the last half of the episode. When I hit the play button, there is a little Appletv icon right on the mini-player which stays selected until I change it.

I re-wired it up and changed the settings in the Appletv device to wired, and it again stops working. How do I know what version of Appletv I have?

is it the old silver apple tv or a black hockey puck?

Black hockey puck.

So it’s just playing inline video embedded in the webpage on Safari. Since I don’t have access to Adult Swim here in Canada, can someone in the US with ATV check? Do you have an example URL to test with?

Black = Apple TV2 or 3.

The only thing that crosses my mind is that there’s something screwy about your wired settings. Like, you’re specifying an IP address that’s not part of your normal subnet. Which is grasping at straws, I know, but wired vs. wireless should not change anything but bandwidth.

I’ll take a look at my box tomorrow sometime. Too late to do it tonight, my wife wouldn’t appreciate it.

I re-wired it up and changed the settings in the Appletv device to wired, and it again stops working.

When you say it “stops working”, what exactly stops working? Do you still have the option to Airplay, but it doesn’t do anything? Does the option not come up at all? Have you tried, instead of using the player’s built-in airplay icon, using mirroring on your iPad and then pressing the fullscreen button in the player?

Just FYI, I tested streaming a Robot Chicken episode to my 2nd generation AppleTV, which is connected via Ethernet, not Wifi. No difficulties, though the transition between the Bioshock Infinite commercial was kind of abrupt both coming and going. Commercials played both at the start and at the half-way mark.

Also, I now remember why I stopped watching Robot Chicken.
