I’m not at all surprised by how awesome the game is, but I am a little surprised by how creepy it is. I don’t know why, but those old women creep the shit out of me every time.
Coolest thing to happen so far: In the second to last area of the first level, I’m being swarmed by the basic skeletons with swords, so I fire the alternate fire of the shotgun, which is a freeze ray, and freeze one of them. The guy behind him swings at me, I dodge, and he ends up cutting off the other guy’s head. I promptly blow him away.
A little bit later, the guy thaws out. Blood’s been spurting out of his neck this whole time, by the way. So he comes running for me, but he can’t see me without a head, so he ends up flailing his sword wildly, running past me, and slamming into the wall. He then falls down and dies from blood loss not long after. Awesome.
BTW, the freezer is mounted on the shotgun for a reason. There’s no point leaving those guys to thaw out when a simple one-two will take them out. Just freeze and shatter with the shotgun – right click, left click.
This is particularly important when you’re dealing with big guys who normally take four or five shots to kill. The freeze-and-shatter combo will quickly sweep them out of your way.
I only played through the first level so far, and it was fun as hell, but my feeling is that the single-player game is going to get repetitive fast.
All the early reviews say that the entire game is identical to the first level with different textures-- you follow the arrow to a quicksave point, a wall drops down behind you, and 1000 screaming undead attack. You kill them all, the wall opens, and you go on to the next quicksave point where the exact same thing happens. After 15 of those, you kill an enormous very cool boss. Hmm.
I didn’t play the demo (I don’t do demos) so… the graphics are gorgeous and the game runs butter smooth. The physics really do add to the experience.
But I really doubt I’ll finish the single-player game. I’m hoping the multi will provide the quakeworld experience I’ve been missing for so long.

What an inane comment! I might as well complain that every turn in Civ is like the first one, but with more units: I select a unit, I click a destination, I add a building to a city, then I hit end turn.
So far painkiller is a fun shooter from the pre-halflife days… but I don’t know if that’s enough for me any more. I like objectives, plot, strong AI and puzzles in my FPS’s. Half-life spoiled me for this kind of repetitive fluff. Sure, it’s fun enough to blow away 1000 skeletons in a row, but compared to far cry or even splinter cell, there’s just no contest.
I bought it primarily for the multiplayer anyway, which has a lot of promise. They’re aiming for the progaming crowd. It’s very slick and well-balanced (I disagree with the anti-stake-on-spawn people) but the netcode needs a lot of work before it has a chance at the crown.

Damn you. I wasn’t at all interested in this game until you posted that. Grrr.
Serious Sam had quite a few huge wide-open levels. No fog, and you could see for a mile. It also had gimmicky almost mini-games, like the bulls and the cannonball gun, that were fun as hell. So far (and i’ve only been through the first two singleplayer levels so far) Painkiller is a much more restricted experience.
The graphics are much better and the physics are sweet though.
How to comment on a PK thread without being accused of pimping? :?
Anyways, I’m glad that those of you who’ve played the game are enjoying it and seem to grok what we were shooting for. Tom, I’m particularly pleased that you like it – I’ve always appreciated your writing and I deeply respect your critical eye. And I mean that in all seriousness… no ass-kissing from this cowboy.
As for the Zombie Lord cutting off the Zombie Warrior’s head: there are many other “moments” like that in the game. Wait 'til you see what Skull does with Hell Bikers…
Since I simply adores Serious Sam it sounds like I’ll have to try the demo once I get back to civilisation, what’s the difference between the two demo’s released?
Stusser, I’ll have a nice tasty dish of crow waiting for you after you’ve played, say, the opera house or the military base. And while you’re certainly entitled to your own opinions, I recommend getting farther before you dismiss Painkiller as “repetitive fluff”.
The freeze/shot combo is the only way I know how to kill the big brutes who carry the flamethrower. In the manual it says to shoot at their weapon instead but the freeze combo is just so much more spectacular.
Oh yeah, “People Can Fly” mode in multiplayer will utterly destroy your mouse

What about my TurboBall? It only took about two years of hardcore q3freeze gaming to kill my last one. Relatively speaking, will “People Can Fly” significantly lower the life expectancy of my favorite Kensington product? That would suck.

I bought the game, I certainly intend on playing more than two levels! I respect your opinion too-- you’re the equivalent of desslock for action games, so I’ll definitely give it more time before running back to finish up farcry.
