I’ve never clicked on that Qualcomm thread because I don’t even know what a Qualcomm is, but every time I see it bumped I think that title ought to read “Fuck Qualcomm right in their qualhole”.
You should, your complete bewilderment will make wumpus’ rage even more entertaining.
Wumpus keeps it to the one place, for the most part, and he is angry at technology, a company… both maybe, not groups of people with certain born identities. I’m not going to ignore Dave for really, really liking Nintendo either.
Please, the proper title is At Woode 2: Rage of the Wumpus
These type of debates are often typically argued with hypotheticals. Adding a new feature isn’t a law being written into stone. You can try something for a month then flip a switch and turn it off after seeing how it actually impacted the community. I still think the narrowly scoped option (per thread) is a reasonable compromise, with a shortish timeout as well.
The most accurate analogy I’ve heard so far is like being at a party where one person is talking so loud it’s hard for the rest of the room to hear their own conversations. Selective ignore isn’t a great solution – probably like just walking off into a corner of the room so you can hear yourself better. But better than leaving the conversation.
I think this is a helpful example . If Dave was upset at dealing with someone constantly posting in the Switch threads with negative opinions about Nintendo, and that poster just happened to obliquely reference racist stereotypes about Japanese people every now and again I would hope all of us would say it was the shitposter not Dave who was at fault.
I disagree with pretty much everyone in P&R from time to time. But for the most part I have no interest in muting or ignoring anyone, even those I constantly disagree with, as most people are posting sincerely. But “polite trolls” who fill threads with tedious nonsense and prevent any other discussion from taking place have to be dealt with somehow to prevent the forum from becoming useless, and personal ignores are the least offensive way to do it.
Great post I want to underline this fact. The notion P&R is a bunch of people agreeing with each other is absolutely false. Many of us have been in the minority, sometimes a minority of 1 at some point or another in that forum. Yet nobody batted an eyelid or found it cause for concern. So I suggest the current problem poster really is unusual in that regard.
Which is why there are a few people whose opinion on Nintendo I ignore, but on other topics welcome their insight. But I wouldn’t want to ignore then forum wide, just that topic.
Yes @stusser I’m looking at you, hows the ‘give up hardware and make phone games’ look now ;)
Actually the obliquely referenced person is not the sole proprietor of blame. And I’m not an advocate for banning either. That is a blunt tool too quickly reached for. Which is why I appreciate those with the actual ban hammer are slow to grab it.
Honestly, and take this for what it is, people do have his opinions in the real world. Hell, they’re my relatives mostly. As such having the information to counter those talking points is useful, and engaging with them nessecary, if only to reinforce how wrong they are.
I get why some are aggressivly against engagement. Especially since, unfortunately, many formerly fringe extreme positions have percolated into mainstream. That is to say that what was once out of bounds racist talking points have become normalized. Which understandably triggers very strong responses.
But devolving into two sided trolling is… not gonna shift the Overton window. I dunno, I don’t have answers. But I’m not super keen on the ‘lets just ban’ crescendo either.
Well, ignore would have to be coded into Discourse before it could be trialled temporarily. And so far that hasn’t happened.
You’re killing me, Smalls.
The idea that P&R can be “ruined” amuses me somehow.
Nobody actually thinks that.
Do they?
(shivers)
It’s true, there was the full range of opinion, from “absolutely not” all the way to “maybe at one point in the past, but not anymore.”
I honestly don’t know what you’re referring to here.
I mean there is substantial disagreement on whether or not conservatives broadly should have have their franchise rescinded, or just registered Republicans, or merely Trump voters. Gosh, you really can’t lump us all together like that, man.
Will there be a limit on the number of people we can ignore?
Heh, possible I mixed you up. But I thought I remembered you being one of the anti Nintendo chorus before the Switch launched. If not, my apologies.
Would you care to disagree? It seems like a pretty fair summary of 2018 mainstream opinion to me. Hell the latter seems like a pretty good summary of Reagan conservative’s opinion the kind of which I see in The National Review rather often these days. Shrug.
