I really do. It’s probably the best way to play games over the Internet going at the moment. I know you guys think I’m this Nintendo freakazoid but that’s not true at all. I even wrote down a few reasons why I love Live last night.
RTCW alone sold half a dozen of my Xbox owning friends on the service early last year(even if barely any of them played it very long, it left a very positive impression).
These next few months are gonna be huge for the online gamer. So much variety and value to choose from, it will be rather difficult for anyone to find at least one game they wouldn’t enjoy over the service.
Isn’t there a video-cam peripheral releasing soon as well?
That’s the funny thing too… I’m just not all that excited to play the first person shooters on Live which are what has been the bread and butter of the service so far as far as I can tell. Only Halo 2 holds that kind of interest for me. I’ll probably grab Ghost Recon used at some point since it’s a measly $12. But for the most part, the things that really get me fired up are the sports games, which I’m currently thoroughly enjoying, and stuff like Guilty Gear XX #Reload which I will have next week.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how Outrun 2 is on there and if Amusement Vision ever releases it, Spikeout. I’m not so happy reading about the lack of integration in a game like Burnout 3. Short time to implement Live or not, I think all publishers should now be held to the standard. With that Microsoft definitely got it right. This is no time to get lenient.
I just wish they could make a controller I’d be comfortable with 100%. The S Controller is nice, but it’s still got problems. I think the width of it is the primary one for me. It feels huge even though it’s really not too terribly big.
Anyway, big thumbs up from me. Hope some of you guys set aside $20 for next week to get Guilty Gear. I want some 2D fighting action with the Qt3 regulars!
I’ve played the PS2 version a bunch of times, both at Mike’s, via rentals, etc. I’m a big 2D fighting fan but spent most of my time with SNK and Capcom fighters. I’ve wanted to buy the PS2 Guilty Gear X2 a bunch of times but just never put down the cash. I can hold my own in the game simply because my 2D fighting skills are pretty honed from other games. I’m anxiously awaiting the chance to learn some characters hardcore in the game and hopping on Live with them.
I could lose every match and it wouldn’t bother me one bit. I welcome the chance to play one on one fighters against real people any time of the day or night. I’ll also be getting Street Fighter Anniversary Collection on the box in January. Street Fighter 3: Third Strike online is like Heaven in a box over a wire.
I’m just A gamerdad, not THE gamerdad. Bub’s the man who wields that title like a blade.
…and I don’t really want to stray into that territory anyway. I hope you guys are reading my column each week. Some ideas come from things that happen here, others just out of my admittedly insane brain. This was the first time (I think) that I asked The Entity if it was ok to post a link. I thought it was something that needed to be out there to maybe get some of the naysayers off my back at least for a little while. :)
Great link! Thanks! Definitely let me know if you set something up for Reload. I’m sure Cathcart will be there also if you do. He’s getting the game next week if I have to go down to Conshohocken and drag him across the street to the Best Buy to pick it up.
I’m not sure I’ll ever put 3S down entirely. I really dig that game. Mark of the Wolves is another one. Just love the characters in the SNK games. I’m seriously considering buying my THIRD Neo Geo cart system to have proper Geo games in the house again. If I do that, I’m never trading it in again. NEVER!
Yea, after spending a bit of timer with SFAC on PS2 recently, the XBL port can’t come soon enough. Really shocking how well even the old Hyper SF2 holds up! We surprisingly had a tough time switching over to SF3 right away given how loony bragging rights could swell pitting classic SF2 players against Turbo editions.
That game could be a license to print money if marketed properly.
Is it Dead or Alive Ultimate that I read about recently that simulates the arcade experience through the Live play? Something about putting quarters on the machine even? I’ll have to look that up. That sounded really cool. I’m not a big DoA fan at all, but I might like to watch some bouncy boobs once in awhile while I push buttons in an online match.
I’d love to see a true fighter renaissance. The arcade that opened here recently has all these classic games in it but also has a Neo MVS with Samurai Shodown V. The problem is I never see anyone there playing so I can’t challenge anyone. :(
BTW, for those in the area, that East Coast Gaming Expo is tomorrow.
Yea, DOA:Ultimate is going to implement the virual arcade thing. 8 people in a room, 6 spectactors ‘lining up quarters’ for their chance to shine.
Really smart system that would have been fantastic put to use in these other fighters.
Edit: I don’t know if it is also in there, but online 4-player simultaneous tag matches would be insanely kewl. Tekken Tag Tourney on PS2 made quantum leaps in rotation years ago aming my little gaming circle for this feature.
Hey, I hate to crash the Dave Long Backpeddling Party and all, but not only did I buy GGXX at its original price, I also had Reload preordered while you were still ranting about how XBox Live was way too much money for what you get. Remember the whole “I don’t think cross-game buddly lists and voice chat is worth the cost of an entire game” speech?
Just wait until Tuesday, I’m not going to be able to hold Millia back. At least you’ll smell like shampoo when you’re all beaten up and humiliated.
See, that eight person thing with two playing and six watching is a great idea. That’s the kind of thing I’d love to see more of in online gaming. Utilize the setting to promote the community WHILE people are actually playing. Given how short the rounds are in a fighting game, getting a bunch of friends together on Live becomes a lot like standing around the machine in the arcades.
There’s plenty of other ways to expand online gaming beyond just “matchup->fight” mechanics. I hope game developers do more stuff like that.

Haha… well, a cheap Live kit salves all open wounds. :) $70 is still a lot of money to play Live. I would never begrudge someone using that as an excuse, me included. ;)
It’s a lot of money but I now do think it’s worth what you get. Fortunately for me it took less money to get it. (I got the live kit for $20 from a guy that bought it two years ago and never signed on.) I’m glad I got it with the system because Live is by far the most compelling feature of the Xbox.
