IGN Creams over Pirates!

And you’ll admit that in public?

Who knows about the remake, but the original is one of the top three games of all time for me.[/quote]

Nope, never got around to it, however Monkey Island 2 is my 2nd favorite game of all time, so at least I cant be accused of pirate blocking…

I think IGN has a problem with premature ejaculation.

crap i didnt even know its out already ! im there dude ! 8)

I hope this doens’t tailor to 8-year old girls. Cause the graphics and dancing make me think that. What I wanted was a remake of Pirates, not a crap-Disney adventure. We already got screwed with Sea Dogs2/errrr I mean Pirates of the Caribbean.

And after reading that whole review, it sounds like the game gets boring/repetitive FAST.

I’m probably going to wait untill the REAL SeaDogs2 comes out…http://www.akella.com/k2/gallery.html...unless some more reliable sources come out with reviews giving Pirates! reasonable scores

I still play pirates and cutthroats to get my pirate fix, Pirates of the Caribbean kinda broke my heart…it could have been the one :(

Thor, are you joking, or is it stil being produced for the Russian market? man that would be great if they made Sea Dogs 2. PotC was such a horrible stinker - and terribly disappointing…

9.2? Then it’s just as good as Moo3!

Phbbbt.

All topped by code wheels and dongles.

well the guys a akella talk to people over at http://www.piratesahoy.net/ and there was some talk of them looking for a US/Euro publisher for the game. Still they had a lot of stuff then come out, Captain Blood, some Age of Sail boat combat simulation thing and one or two others, plus SeaDogs2(Corsiars2 in russia). And now with Sid’s Pirates! maybe they have decided to keep it back awhile?

They have more info in the forums at piratesahoy about Seadogs2 - its sounding like it could be really rather nice 8)

Still this is about Sid’s Pirates - and i’m hoping this will also be a good game, we have been starved of good pirate games for far too long!

Did Pirates! actually make it into US stores yesterday? There’s been very little buildup for it, considering it’s a remake of one of the best loved games ever. Only one review so far, too, and I’ve yet to read any player impressions.

I get my copy today. I have a dr’s appointment so will give impressions later tonight.

Just got the limited edition. One DVD, 144 Page Manual, and some other inserts. Game installed quickly, played around a bit, seems pretty damn fun so far, never played the original. Graphics aren’t that great, but that’s to be expected from a Sid game, I’m more interested in the play depth. There seems to be plenty there so far… although I’m a tad dissapointed that the realism isnt quite there I was hoping for. Seems almost like a kid’s game, but thats cool since I’m a huge Monkey Island fan to boot.

Spoilers

Sailed in to Curacao, spoke with the govener who told me about a loaded Spanish ship that was seen heading south recently. Went and whooped it’s ass easily, returned to port for a reward from the Govener and sold the ship. Gonna look over the manual now, as there are quite a few questions I have.

Graphics 7/10
Sound 9/10
Gameplay 8/10
Fun 8/10

Dude, can you flick through the manual and see if there’s lots of piratey flavour material? The original game had excellent docs (in true golden-age Microprose style).

I’ve pre-ordered the UK version of the ltd ed. I hope it’s got everything the US version has.

Yeah those old MP manuals were awesome. Darklands and Pirates! were my two favorite I think.

Actually, its a very well done manual in my opinion. It lists all the cities, all the ships, upgrades, pirates, special items, and all their according stats… It lists in detail the way to play all the parts of the game, seems very complete, and very well done to me.

Spiral-bound! It looks like there is at least one error on page 107, though. Speed & Cargo are probably supposed to be seperate categories, and cargo capacity info would have been helpful there.

There is quite a bit of history & background packed in to it.

I’m going to take this for a spin while mulling over whether or not to restart my primary Bloodlines character.

Let us know ASAP what you think, I may want to pick this up for the long weekend…

Keep the impressions coming, guys. I want this one bigtime. The original was the game that made me steal my Atari ST back from my mother’s room every day, when she confiscated it while I was supposed to be studying for exams. I nearly creamed three years later when I played the Amiga version with better graphics.

I’m specifically interested in knowing whether trading is really viable in the new game. It was always difficult and unrewarding to trade for profit, or to try and nurture your favourite towns. I’d really like this one to fall Original Pirates! and Port Royale somewhere in the middle, erring on the side of fun (i.e. Pirates!).

Pfffffff! I doubt very much that even the limited edition version will have a spiral-bound manual in the UK. UK publishers are allergic to providing any kind of value for money.

Updated Impressions:

Ok, I’ve had a few hours to sit with it and play around a bit. I have mixed feelings so far. I havent found a way to slow down time, and with the waters being completely packed with ships of all sort, its really hard for me to keep track of all the goings on. Pirates sacking this city or this ship, this nation doing this to this other nation, all in super speed time kinda makes me feel hectic and rushed. Perhaps its better I break it down by gameplay:

Overhead Sailing Map - Lots of ships going to and fro, very open ended, battles raging all over, real nice atmosphere, really makes the game feel alive. However it suffers from having a little too much activity however, I think in a patch perhaps, they should lower the ship count a bit, I mean sometimes it’s shoulder to shoulder with ships on the screen.

Ship Battles - pretty damn cool, by far the most fun I’ve had in the game so far. It’s fun to try and shoot ships from a long distance to test your skill. I do have one big concern though, at any time you can charge your ship up and board the other ship, what’s the point of even waisting ammo shooting at it?

Dueling/Fencing - cool in that Monkey Island kinda way, however, just like Monkey Island, the novelty is almost completely gone after about 2 or 3 fights. Wish there was more I could say about it, but it comes down to being just another hand-eye coordination mini-game.

Land Fighting - This is the one that really gets me cause I was looking very much forward to it… It feels like it coulda been so much more if it had just been a little deeper, as it stands, its pretty cool, but after sacking some towns, I was already hoping for a auto-resolve button I cant seem to find :) Bucaneers shoot, pirates rape, officers = uber. Simple formula, but there are some nice little twists like natives deciding to help you out or such.

Jail/Sneaking - Hard to say about this one, pretty emmm boring… It’s kinda cool at first , but it got old quick. At this point if I lose a ship battle, I’m just reloading a save game.

Dancing - Sorry to say, but it’s pretty gay to me. It will be fun for those people who like hand/eye coordination mini-games or DDR, but it just seriously annoyed me…

Economics - After sacking a couple of treasure and merchant ships, I found myself with a vast amount of gold that I used to just mindlessly upgrade my ship with all I could. I hate to say it, but perhaps I should try on a harder difficulty (was playing on the 3rd difficulty I believe), cause as it stands, upgrades and money just come way too quick and easy, which really ruins the mood for me.

This game is good… no doubt, but from my first few hours playing it, this’ll be something I get into when I have nothing else to play. However I went back to playing Vampire Bloodlines now, and soon to be KOTOR 2 in December.
