Raymond Carver has a great short story about a guy fucking himself up by jumping off a roof into a hotel swimming pool. He misses, of course, and it’s the beginning of his decent into ruin.

It’s as dangerous as it looks – he barely missed the ground, if he missed it at all…

It’s actually about 1.1s drop yielding ~6m, assuming it was a dead drop. However at the point he leaps his mass already has some net downward velocity, which is hard to quantify but will increase how far he travels down in a given time. He also leaps down somewhat, rather than straight out.

Also note for comparison that’s he’s jumping off a third story balcony railing – clearly more than a 10’ drop. See also the size of the trees relative to the people on the ground. I’d say these together put it at somewhere a bit over 20’.

Well, maybe so, but are you refuting that the whole thing was filmed with a fish bowl lens to make it look a lot more dangerous than it is? Because it’s pretty clear from the GIF that a lens trick is most of the effect. Watch how the horizontal edge of the building as he jumps bulges. That’s a fisheye lens, without a doubt. This jump was stupid, no question, but not nearly as stupid as the image makes it look.

Yeah, there’s lens distortion. Doesn’t change that he leapt from the third floor, or that he just barely made it.

Last I checked KE = (mv^2)/2, with no mention of what lens some observer was using.

More importantly, that he was supine at the moment of impact. That’s going to fuck you up good from ten feet, much less a higher point.

10 feet per story - 4 feet for rail = 24 feet… has to belly flop as it is the shallow end of the pool… yes it had to hurt like heck… looks like about a 5-10 feet horizontal as the shrubs have to be 3-4 feet and same for the brick walkway
