It’s been a while, but yeah I remember him doing something like that. I thought he was trying to widen the pin-hole so it would take less effort to pull (heh). But, damn, I saw the movie in the theaters, so I really don’t know.

It’s Systema. It’s a really funky and weird martial art which is less about hitting people (although you can) and more about (in self defense terms, anyway), getting someone on the ground and successfully running away.

I tried to find some YouTube vids but most are low quality and bad. Here are a couple which show off how it looks/works.

Some of the videos are quite odd-looking with people falling over randomly. What is often going on is a hand is being flashed into an attacker’s face while they are charging in and your instinct is to jerk away, thinking it’s a real punch. That, combined with a push will send folks to the floor quickly and in an odd-looking way.

It’s hard to find instructors outside of the US, Canada and Eastern Europe. I would love to learn more than the two classses I managed to get to.

I’m always suspicious of any martial art that relies on overly-complicit partners. I get the head manipulation and some of the basic principles like taking balance and moving off-line, but there’s just way too much “I lunge forward when I punch” going on.

Seems to keep the spetsnaz happy, along with a couple of folks I met whos job it was to bounce folks. But whatevs, martial arts arguments are best kept to YouTube comments where the full intellectual rigour of those involved can be appreciated.
