Yeah, they’re called angel flares. Here’s the original video that gif is from, and here’s another one of two planes where you can see the smoke pattern better.

On further inspection, it does look more angelic. Phoenix/Jean Grey was just the first thing that came to my mind when I looked at it. Not sure whether that makes me a heathen or just a big ol’ nerd.

It was always an animated series, but yes, these are from Friendship is Magic. Which you should be watching, because Lauren Faust made it and they make a significant amount of nerd jokes. They had a full Galadriel speech last week!
