Let me get this straight: Considering that the engine is only turning one cogwheel(the one in red when in neutral), it would mean that doing 5000 RPM in gear 2 uses the same amount of fuel as 5000 RPM is gear 5 even though you’re probably going faster. Right?

Correct, barring some other factors such as wind resistance at high speeds, which means you need a bit more throttle to maintain that RPM. Just like a bicycle, as mentioned already.

Of course, 5k RPM in 2nd gear means you’re going a lot slower than you would at 5k RPM in 5th gear, so your fuel mileage is shit.
