How about Nome Alaska? That should be the ‘leave me alone, self made man’ heaven.

They don’t want that. They want the state to leave them alone. They want freedom from state taxes. Let’s face it, California loves to find new and interesting ways to tax you. And the make up of the legislature leads to a continuing list of additional liberal craziness when it come to what to tax and what to use the money for. The legislature made Jerry Brown in his last few years look like a moderate.

Hey now, I resemble that remark! And I’m one of the 48.3% of Texans who voted for Beto in the last election. We’re not all gun-toting MAGAs.

When things are going well for people, it’s probably not that uncommon for people to want the government to leave them alone. There’s a lot of stuff people don’t like about CA, but I sure like the consumer laws coming out of them… like Gift Cards that don’t expire, inactivity fees on gift cards. They’re kind of leaders in a lot of areas, but those kind of protections and laws… they’re not free. People work on those.

I live in Texas and my direct line has held land in Texas from patent in the 1840s. If i can call Chicago a snow blasted wasteland buried under bullet casings and round lasagna i can make fun of my own state ^^.

And i’ve hiked Guadalupe Peak of course.

I mean i like San Diego - Monterrey island has great climate. But it’s like they forgot to build roads. La Jolla is even better but omg driving in traffic is there is horrifying. New Mexico’s timeless charm is largely thanks to having no middle class. Ect…

The whole concept of a “Sooner” in Oklahoma is someone who cheated and grabbed land earlier than they should have. It shouldn’t be surprising that Warren cheated a little on her college forms!

Watching dozens of people running shoulder to shoulder in circles around Central Park is just the musky human spice to the smell that is New York City, a worm collection of old buildings that need to be redone.

It is specifically important for conservatives that California be a failed state. The fact that it’s so Liberal, but also very rich and the home of so much tech innovation drives them crazy, so they need it to actually be a hellhole of violence, homelessness, rampant socialism, runaway deficits, illicit/immoral behavior, etc.

And the truth is that there is a lot of that in California, and some of that is, in fact, due to how liberal it is. But the degree to which conservatives want to portray it as way worse than it is is sad.

Edit: it doesn’t help that there’s no conservative poster-state anymore. They tried with Kansas, but that didn’t work at all. And with Scott Walker out, they can’t point to Wisconsin.

What do you mean? I’m cool with keep using Kansas as the conservative poster-state. Heck, let’s throw Oklahoma there too.

Edit: I found this interesting map from Gallup that ranks states by ideology. I guess the main thing interesting there is that liberals rarely make up the majority of any state and most states have a significant ‘moderate’ population, whatever that means.

Trump is sad his army men wont commit atrocities because they’re too professional.

We’re America. There are some things we don’t do (except when Trump is President, then all bets are off).

He is what we technically call a ‘mean asshole.’

People used to say Trump doesn’t have any real beliefs. I’m beginning to believe he truly, deeply hates Hispanic people, and perhaps non-whites in general. I don’t think he’s just amoral, playing to his base.

The man is racist. You don’t say those things and then get to back-off and say you didn’t really mean it. It’s part of their playbook to try and do that trick.

I did not, however, start his presidency believing that. I gave him time to convince me what a pos he is.

Trump: We have gas. We have the best gas. Not that I would call for their use. But if someone used them for me. It would stop them from coming in. Just saying.

He has no beliefs other than racism. It’s always been there, but it’s gotten much more pronounced under the influence of Grima Wormtongue.

Just FYI, none of my posts were directed at your posts. And I also can poke fun at my own state. I just hate seeing it so stereotyped when it is in fact a very diverse place geographically, ethnically, and culturally.

That map makes the same error Gallup (and other pollsters) always make: it determines who is a liberal, conservative, etc based on a single direct question about the respondents’ political views. People describe themselves as more conservative than their actual policies views, and many people simply like to think of themselves as ‘moderate’ because the alternative to being moderate is, well, extreme.

Plus, the definition of moderate has changed with the way the goal posts have moved.

Ah yes, I smell Grima Wormtongue.

And sure enough…

So I saw an article in the local McClatchy newspaper that the SSA is now sending out to employers lists of their employees who are not using their “own” SSN’s. Several different employers here in the valley (not listed) have been contacted by the SSA and told they have 30 days to comply. Now the article didn’t say what that meant, but the fear is that employers will be firing employees who have used someone else’s SSN and this has sent a shudder through the ag labor market.

I think many people have stated a preference for making employers be more responsible for who they hire, writers like Ruben Navarrette have favored this. This may be the beginning of that.

Without knowing the scope, it’s hard to say how this impacts anything yet, if that is a widespread push.Suppose, say, it’s just targeted to farms in California? Now we’d have t ask why, and also wonder if that was motivated, but also wonder if that gave benefits or financial gain to another state instead. It would also make me wonder why now if the SSA had this ability for a longer time than just recently.

I’m always skeptical these days reading the news. I would say even ESPECIALLY so regarding news affecting immigration, border security, and illegal workers.

I did a quick lookup, this has been done before in the past but there were legality questions surrounding how to handle this with actual employees.
