I’m sure work will make them free, so it’s all good.

So I have a couple co-workers who last week both made comments about “the wall”. Now understand that both are about as anti-Trump as you can be. Both are minorities millennials, both are women, both are, at least in my opinion, very intelligent. Both have recently made comments, in hushed voices because you have to do that nowadays, about how things might be better if there was a wall.
One woman has found herself competing for city housing with the undocumented, the other has had a couple minor run ins with them. The woman competing for housing is Latino, the other is black.
Now there is no danger of them actually voting for Trump in the future, but I think the Dems would be wise to come up with some kind of immigration policy as part of the campaign process. I don’t think we can continue going down the same old non-road of ignoring it or turning to sanctuary cities.
The biggest fallacy here is that the Wall would actually do anything about their issues. If the GOP were serious about this, the lowest hanging fruit is mandatory e-Verify to address 90%+ of illegal immigration issues in the US as well as the draw.
Instead, it’s hatred and a symbolic Wall.

The wall is purely a symbol… the thing is, even Trump doesn’t even WANT to build the wall. It’s more useful as some imaginary thing that you need him to build.
Even when they were given money, they haven’t spent it… they don’t even have a workable plan to do anything.

I don’t think either of the people I mentioned actually wants the wall, but it does represent a symbol of a problem that does actually exist.
And it doesn’t have to be hatred to admit that there is a problem. I think anyone who doesn’t see a problem is choosing to ignore the evidence. By the same token anyone who thinks the problem is as bad as Trump paints it is also choosing to ignore the evidence.
It would probably end up being a negative for Trump if he got the money. For one thing, he would lose the ability to complain about it. Secondly, the amount of money he wants probably will result in something like the California High Speed rail plan, a half built system that does nothing for anybody. Who would take the blame when after spending $20b on a “wall” the immigrants kept coming?
This has been said many times, recently from news, bloggers, etc. The policy push from Dems cannot only be, “no wall.” It should be, “a wall isn’t what we need, what we need is X.” I have heard it a few times though it’s generic, “immigration reform.” Still, I guess even that generic comment is better than just a, “no wall,” remark. Most voters right now would be hard pressed to tell you the actual immigration stance from any of the current Democratic candidates.
I think most voters think that policy is more or less status quo ante, a return to policies in place before Trump took office.
They are, and it has always started with DACA guarantees. I agree more is necessary, but I think those most desiring the change (the GOP) need to start with mandatory e-Verify, and negotiate in good faith re: DACA and a pathway to citizenship for those already part of the communities here.

With my desire for a more intense immigration policy I still think you have to give those who have been here and kept their noses clean a chance at citizenship if they want it. Or at least keep the cops from their door.
But you need to make employers responsible for who they hire by giving them things like e-verify and making it easier for them. Businesses shouldn’t have to do the INS’s job. If they follow protocol and someone still gets hired then so be it. But there are too many industries that simply close their eyes to it.
Trump Org certainly closed their eyes to it.

Julian Castro and Beto both have comprehensive immigration policies up on their websites.

The GOP translation of that is something like, “For 10 years not a single white child died in DHS custody. And that continues to this day, thanks to the strength and willpower of our dear leader, President Trump.”
Nah, it is “This wouldn’t happen if it weren’t for Obama! He’s the one to blame for opening the floodgates!” And this isn’t an exaggeration.
Also they deserve to die because their parents BROKE THE LAW (when they applied for asylum in the legally proscribe manner.)

Yeah but most of El Paso is Mexican anyways so it’s a win-win, right?
A case worth watching in Arizona.
